My 98 TL1000R runs very rough between idle & 4000rpm. Once over 4000 it revs smoothly to redline. It gives a real kick at 4000 when it starts to run properly that it almost throws you off the back. Makes corners very interesting. This is only a recent problem and I have had the bike for 18 months. I Have tested coils, crank angle sensor, cam angle sensor & rectifier. I think the problem may be ECU. I was just hopeing someone had come across this problem. Cheers.

Do you have a Power Commander (or equivalent product) fitted? It sounds like it could be a fueling issue.

Hi

Like Tin, sounds to me like a fueling issue. My Bandit is doing similar things at the moment since the weather got cold, but I know it runs slightly leaner than it really wants to at low revs.

All the best

Thanks for the replies. I don't have a Power Commander fitted. I thought it might be a spark problem because you can smell fuel when its running rough. I thought this might be because it wasn't getting spark but perhaps your right and it is getting more fuel than it can handle at low rpm. Perhaps this is a mapping problem that a Power Commander might fix? Thanks.

Hi

Is the bike standard, or have you got different cans on it or a different full exhaust. Air filters?

All of these will affect the fueling slightly and might well cause a flat spot. In winter the air is colder which can easily result in a weaker mixture on most crude fuel injection systems such as those used on bikes (most car systems will use a MAP sensor or MAF sensor to detect the amount of air going through the throttle, while many bike systems are just mapped off the throttle position).

All the best

Keith

I don't know enough about the TL1000, but if it is a carb'd bike rather than fuel injection then I'd say it sounds like a blocked jet in one of the carbs.

Thanks Kickstart,
The bike is fitted with after market cans & K&N air filter. These have been fitted for over 12 months and the problem has only begun recently. I am located in Australia and it is the middle of summer so I don't think the weather is affecting it.

Hi

To me it sounds like it is running slightly lean (and the K&N with pipes probably do make it slightly leaner than standard). However Aus summer weather might well richen it up with the hot air (although I suppose it is possible that Suzuki have set up some kind of compensation for the air temperature which is not quite right).

Probably worth checking things like the fuel filter and the fuel pressure regulator. Most fuel injection systems work by using the fuel pressure regulator to maintain a constant difference in pressure between the fuel and the air in the intakes. This way the amount of fuel injected is pretty much directly proportional to how low the injectors are opened for.

If the fuel filter is seriously blocked then there will be insufficient pressure (there is a fair amount spare), and if the pressure regulator is faulty then it might not maintain the pressure.

Also worth checking the injectors, or possibly chucking in a bottle of injector cleaner (not the best solution but cheap and easy).

All the best

Keith
