Depends if if you want your ar5e in a sling if your caught without the restrictor by the police/insurance folk?

Or if your going for the DAS, don't bother and feel the power!

You've ridden a (was it restricted?) rs125 for a short time in winter.

Personally I think it would be a much better idea to get it restricted to start with at least.

Nope it was a CB125, but i have ridden the gixxer around an industrial site and it was a damn sight easier to control in my opinion, brakes worked better, clutch was easier to operate and when I wanted to go faster it went faster.

Bet the insurance hurts! Surprised
If you get caught doing 120+mph somewhere and they see your 19, its a bit obvious your riding without the appropriate licence.

So do you suggest

a) Get it restricted
b) Dont ride at 120mph
c) Dont get caught

Personally i would say get it restricted, even though i'm 19 as well and my sv isn't restricted, but i have been riding for nearly 4 years and my restriction is up at the start of august! Very Happy

I think as it is such a step up i think at least for a few months, even until summer, getting it restricted, get comfortable with it in real life road conditions, how it breaks and turns, if your likely to make a mistake its likely to be while your getting used to it, will be worth it, dont want to risk doing an emergency stop for the first time while do a silly speed and slide yourself in to the back of someones car as there will be hell to pay!

Riding it in an empty industrial estate will only go so far in familiarising yourself with it.

Thats my personal view, but if you think you can ride it within your limits and get used to it then go for it.

Have fun either way! Twisted Evil

I'd get it doen so that you've got the bit of paper so that if the police or your insurance ask for it you can show them IF you keep them in your bike or not is entirely up to you, my ZX6R was never restricted and my TL1000R was restricted for the ride home from the bike shop having them fitted.

Hi, my advice would be restrict it for abit until you get more use to the bike, I remember being 19 and if i had that sort of power then i would have used it, but i wouldnt have been able to control the bike if i would have got in to trouble (skill comes with time).

Just think if you hit a car or 1 hits you whos going to come of worse! So get use to the bike then de-restrict it for summer time.

I would also restrict it, going from your test straight onto a gixxer 600 is a big step and they have a lot of power. If your not used to it then your likely to injure yourself. Restrict it till your used to the power delivery and have a bit more experience.

My XJ should produce ~70bhp, but I've got it restricted, should the worst come to the worst, whether the restrictors are physically there or not, I've got that piece of green paper that say they are.

If the worst comes to the worst with you, you don't have that piece of paper.

jumping from 15bhp to ~100bhp on a gixxer6? is a big jump, personally I'd be happier knowing I'm not 'as' likely to highside on the next corner.

On another note I watched a new rider highside his brand new r6 on a roundabout simply because it was too powerfull. Had it been restricted, he might still have a pristine bike..

Get it restricted until you're bored with it and feel you can handle the full power. Is there a way of restricting it to say 60bhp with smaller washers, as 33-100 is quite a jump.

I had been on a 125 for 5 months and then to a ZX6R and didn't crash for a year which was when a deer ran out.

Craigt19 also did the same thing but was on a 125 for longer.

As long as you're aware of there being 100bhp and are vaguelly sensible then you should be okay.

There are two issues here:

1) Your safety

2) Legal issues

lets deal with 1) first, it doesn't matter how much power the bike delivers, you are in control, and as long as you build it up at a gradual pace then you'll be fine, but if you don't think you have the self control to do that then best get it restricted, 'cos if you unleash all them horses at the same time, and it happens to be thwe wrong time, those horses are going to stampede all over you and you bike.

As for 2) your insurance company, may or may not request the restriction certificate, but you will not know until after you accept their quote. So you really need the certificate. If you are caught riding it unrestricted they will throw the book at you and you are likely to lose your licence, (unlicencensed, no insurance etc), and to be honest the only time you are likely to get caught is if you have a VERY serious accident where life is threatened or worse still someone is dead. So I don't think its a high probability risk, but it is a very serious outcome, I'd go for having it restricted, that is going to feel pretty good to you. I reide a CBR1000 and I've ridden my Sons restricted ER% and its still good fun. Thumbs Up

Hmm, Richard I'm sensing your son may grow bored of the er5 after say 2 months on the restriction. I know I did, as is Dodsi, another member here. I'm guessing it must be something to do with our age Very Happy

I'm by far not a speedfreak but wouldn't mind a bit more "kick" when accelerating.

Source some restrictors from ebay from people who are sellings gsxr600's (ask if they have any restrictors) and fit them yourself. Its probably a good idea to restrict it initially and then its up to you, but I wouldn't blame you for de-rizzing it after a "getting used to it" period.

On the legal side, I was stopped on my ZX6R by a bike cop at 17, he thought it was the largest bike I could ride until I was 21, so the police aren't exactly up on it. They didn't check for Zimma when they caught him doing wheelies on a Firestorm, and I don't believe they asked for them when they caught Pho speeding over 100, you can fairly safely say the police aren't going to catch you.

Restrict it. Then after a few weeks when you get used to the 33bhp de-restrict it. That way you will slowly work you way from 125 to 600.

I had a full power GS500E after passing my test (had the cert though) but I have had my GSXR600 restricted (I'm 18) and I'm thinking I'll keep it that way until the summer, in this weather you don't want all that power on a new bike on your jump up from 125-600 in my opinion.

Cheers for the recommendations. Josh what sort of restriction have you got fitted and how much did it skin you? (if you dont mind me asking Cool )

How does the bike feel restricted? Does it just get to a certain speed then stop or does it lose power from the entire ranger etc.

Thanks

I think you should ride it restricted until your 33bhp limit is up, it's a much safer option.

If you were going for a 500, I'd say maybe not, but the difference between a 500 and a 600 sports is immemse.

Don't be silly, restrict it before it restricts you.

Well I'm having my Bandit restricted and right now I am thinking I will keep it restricted for 2 years, but who knows.

My Dad has told me sternly that he doesn't want me to take the restrictors out. Sad
