You must be bored of hearing about my knackered TZR, but one last question:

I charged up the battery yesterday, went out today and the lights still dip when i turn the indicators on, even with the engine running.

Ah and also the revs drop when the lights are turned on, but that is the YPVS motor not working well...

Is it the battery or the generator thing? I did have to top up the battery recently but the level was almost halfway.

Hi

Just about any bike will slightly dim the headlights when the indictors flash. A small battery will make this effect far greater (and the TZR battery is only small, as it does not need to power a starter motor).

The ypvs motor only opens the power valve at high revs (other than the self cleaning when you turn the ignition on) so should not affect the revs at low speed at all.

All the best

Keith

You know what it means that your spark plugs are sparking more efficiently because their receiving the correct amount of power!

Have you installed the correct wattage of headlight bulb for your model of bike as it maybe drawing more power than what the original one would have done?

Yes, it could be due to a faulty alternator, but I would check & clean your connection blocks with WD40 first and test the wiring for a fault, if need be, and so you'll need to use a multimeter to check both of these possibilities out.

With a multimeter you will be able to tell if the alternator is charging the battery succesfully while the engine is turned on according to your bike's specifications in the service manual.

After you've cleaned all the connectors & wiring is okay and you still discover that the voltage is below what is specified in your manual then it's your alternator that's at fault and therefore you need to inspect that either by yourself or by a qualified mechanic.

the best way to check your battery is :
- put it on charge slowly for 10 hours , let it cool down for an hour and check voltage (must be 12.8 to 13.2 volts)
- let it on side for a day and re-check voltage , il you've lost 0.2 volts or more , your bettery is dead
- re-fit on the bike and if your bug continue it's 2 possibilities :
a) a lack of charging , so must check alternator , regulator & diodes
b) a loose feeding or a short-circuit component wich is obviously the hardest thing to detect

Well charging the battery does take some power, but it is a tiny amount. Assuming a massive (for a 125) alternator of 200W, then the most it is pulling is a but over 200w of power. Say double it to take account of losses in the charging system and it is pulling 400w. That means it is loosing you a shade over 1/2 a hp.

It is possible that there is insufficient power for the ignition system and the lights and the servo motor, but without a charging problem it is not likely (doubt a battery problem would cause this).

Start the engine and put a voltmeter over the battery. At idle you should be getting around 13v, and as you rev the engine that should rise to a bit over 14.5v (but not much over that). If you don't get that there there is a problem.

All the best

Keith
