i know the the d6's have been about abit, but does anyone know how long? Earliest ive seen is 98.

The reason i ask is a mate of my dads is selling a (i presume cosmetic crash repaired) custom paint jobbed daytona for 1500, thats apparently low mileage. And id just like to know what its maximum age is likely to be.

Also just as a point anybody owned one? Id imagine it probably is one of the 3 headlight oldschool ones, top speed in reality? Wheelie capabilities... Tall fat gits riding them capabilities.

Thanks in advance guys, im not just being lazy, but the internet has failed me far too much today.

Im 6 foot 4 and getting near the dark side of 17 stone.

Id forgotten about marjay... i think i should harass him about them.
Annoyingly im not even sure what cc daytona it is, if its the 955 i doubt id get insured on there, but id certainly have the 600 off him... beautiful bikes.

Hi

Don't think they go back to 1998, think it was 2000 or 1999.

Performance is marginally down on a hot 600s of its time. Handling and braking are better. Early ones had major problems with a large flat spot in the fuel delivery, which should be almost eliminated with the latest fuel / ignition maps (the fuel injection can be easily reprogrammed by a Triumph dealer with the diagnostic tool, or by an owner with a suitable piece of software).

All the best

Keith

I have seen many mentioned as being from 1998.

Are you sure you are not thinking of the Daytona T595?
I thought that the Daytona 600 was a lot more recent than that (2003 onwards?) and the 600 before that was the TT600. Confused

Quite possibly.... sadly my dad is a complete numpty when it comes to bikes, and just said triumph daytona. So i assume around a 600, but i cant be 100% certain what exact model.

Well if it is a 1998 Daytona then it will be the Daytona T595 (955cc) and should be capable of 160mph. I'm pretty sure they would wheely okay if thats what you want although they are generally quite a heavy bike, not too bad on the move but noticable when wheeling them round a garage/car park etc.
£1500 sounds like a good price if its in reasonable condition, I had fun riding my mates home for him when he bought one last year. Smile

OK,
The TT600 was introduced in late 1999. It was not renamed/restyled as a Daytona until 2003 (I think).

Any bike named Daytona before 2002 but after 1997 has to be a 955cc model (either called a T595 or a T955i) This was introduced in 1997 as the T595 and renamed (out of pure customer confusion) as the 955i (to reflect the size of its engine).

Previous to 1997 there are many and varied models named 'Daytona' including 900cc and 1200cc models. These have a steel spine frame and are very heavy indeed. They have a lot of grunt, but aren't exactly sportsbikes by modern terms.

Triumph did not produce any bike less than 700cc until 1999.

I would imagine that it is a T595/955i model (three headlight as you say) Virtually the same as my 955i.

{edit} If its around £1500 then it has to be one of the old steel framed models, the cheapest T595 is still worth at least 3k.{edit}

ooooh the confusion. Thanks for the help anyway lads.

All i know is that its a triumph, for 1500, with lowish mileage and a custom paint job, and its one of the lower cc's.

One would assume its probably abit fucked then., but the thing that attracts me is that he is a mate of my dads with alot of biking knowledge so it should be kosher. So from what you say the prices dont add up.

Well as a side note, anyone know any 'sporty' bikes around 600 cc, at most about 5-6 years old (for reliability - im off hobby bikes for a bit) for about 2 grand tops. Im not too fussed about make, or faired, naked or bikini, as long as i can get two people on it without much fuss, a top box if possible and wheelie it. Ill be a happy bunny. So far ive looked relatively seriously at a hornet, and glanced at daytonas, speed triples etc. Im just after something i can give occasiaonal lifts to girls on, travel back and force to uni on, and blat about on whenever i fancy abit of hooning.

Hi

Consider a Thundercat. You might just get one in that budget. Bandit would be easy to find for that much. The TT600 does not go for much more than that (think there is a brand new one for £4000 in this weks MCN).

All the best

Keith

Speed four, but they were released in 2002, so you'll be hard pressed to find one cheaper than £3k

Ok well heres a suggestion, how about an Sv 650... ?

They are cheap and cheerful, wheelie well (alledgedly) and ebay is awash with well cared for cheap uns.

Two bad points, its good for short people (which i aint), and its suspension is shit for fat people (which i am).

I had enough of that with the goose. Tap the brake and all you can see is asphalt without the joy of back wheels being airborne.

Plus i could get bored pretty quickly. But i suppose it would keep me more out of mischief.

Go and sit on one. Because of their reputation my better half had a look at one but found them to be way too tall (and she can ride my 1200 Bandit with the standard seat just about).

All the best

I looked for an SV around 1.5k and saw a couple with minor cosmetic damage etc.

They /do/ wheelie, even on standard gearing. In fact, after I sold my VFR and bought an SV-S I wheelied it a couple of times by accident. Downgear it a little and you'll never have to use the front tyre! The suspension is on the hard side if anything, it just doesn't have many refinements (like adjustability). For the price you are looking to pay, I don't think I would find a bike with adjusters anyway. TBH they are cracking value, there are loads of spares and aftermarket bits available and they are cheap.

And they are great fun!

Mine topped 130mph indicated, and knowing your reputation for inappropriate speed, you should maybe downgear it so it tops out at 100. You'll get done for wheelies, but what the hey!

Oh and my mate who is six foot seven, found the SV very comfortable indeed.

I would feign shock, disbelief and perhaps some slander charges.

But sadly you are right. Or at least, it has been known.

I am curbing my enthusiasm though, rather well IMHO, but there is something rather nice about tripling the overtaken vehicles speed when going past them ( Twisted Evil not that i would do that now unless provoked, either by them or other issues)

I think that may be a safe bet though, does sound like a pretty perfect bike for me. Only one other query, what do pillions make of it? I have so far been plagued with crap pillion bikes, and altho it doesnt have a twin seat (its two seperate seats), It looks like it could still be comfy. Or at least better then the goose.

Good god the whinging passengers gave me after a quick trip.

Have you noticed the oldschool-ish daytonas and the sv faired have almost identical front head light profiles.... Hmmm sneaky.

Oh and just as a final point -no stature jokes or offence intended-, surely you can get a much higher speed out of a bike then me, some lardy giant.... drag and worse power:weight etc.

Sorry just verbal diarrhoea.

IME down gearing doesn't mean you speed less, on my ZX6R I think I used to speed more after down gearing it as it is much easier to get to high speeds quicker than with standard gearing, if you up geared it then it'd be much harder to speed. Smile

Pillion seat is good, pegs are a little high, but it has a squishy wide seat and a good rear grabrail.

Its actually a very good pillion bike... although perhaps less so when you have downgeared it!

Don't discount the Thundercat, it's a very good bike and quite capable of keeping up with sports bikes. Has one of the smoothest engines ever as does it's big brother. Very under rated bikes.
