My Son was stopped by the Police and given a producer........fair enough I suppose, but while stopped, they queried if it was the right number plate for the bike, as "the age of the plate, does not tally, with the look of the age of the bike, the bike looks too old"..............cheeky feckers, its a 53 reg bike, and its still current, you can buy a new one now Shocked ..........what does your average plod know about bikes?.....This officer of the law, even managed to tick the wrong box saying no L plates, when he was displaying L plates.

I went straight up the Cop Shop, and got them to radio the officer in question and confirm he did have L plates wjilst it was fresh in his mind, that could've cost him 3 points, if I had not been on the ball and spotted it and got it sorted Middle Finger

Sounds like misconduct to me, I'd say the officer needs a talking to from his boss at the least. Wink

Does anyone have to do some thing to attract the old bill? I used to get followed everywhere when I had a sporty car, just because I was 21.

"Routine check" is just an excuse to be a nuisance!

Sounds like the cop could easily have been more annoying. I'd almost put money on there being something on your sons bike or in his riding that the police could have done him for. So I wouldn't be too worried about a producer as long as he does have all the necessary paperwork, they could have made allot more hassle for him if they'd wanted.

Oh yeah, be worth mentioning to your son that it'd be worth if similar thing happens again to check the producer form as the cop fills it out and gives it to him, with the L plates thing they could probably say that your son accepted the bit of paper like that at the road side and didn't disgree with it so they could well say that was him accepting the form and accepting/agreeing with its content.

Dodsi, we live right in the middle of the town, so he has to ride through the town centre area to get home, do that most nights and you are going to get attention, that someone who lives on an estate on the outskirts is not going to get. He had been out with mates at the go-kart track, where a group had hired the track to muck about with mini-motos, so he went to watch. He was simply coming home at 10:30pm through the town centre.

In the town was a personnel carrier with a load of PC's on board, and they had decided to target the road users, there were two Scooters pulled up, and a couple of boy racer cars. He came along, so the spare one pulled him. he was asked if he knew these scooter boys, to which he answered no.

I have no problem with him getting pulled up and getting a producer, how else are they to try to track stolen bikes? or uninsured bikes?

The issue is, that for the simple mistake of a tick in the wrong box, he could have got 3 points, and there would be no real defence against it. Crying or Very sad

As much as I agree that police were wrong, he really should have spotted that when they gave him the bit of paper and said "ermm my bike does have L plates so please correct this". In their defence they are only human and humans do make mistakes.

The defence is to have a quick read over the bit of paper as they give it to you, rather than shoving it in your pocket and letting your family look at it when you get home.

Of course he's got all the right paperwork, including the L plates that the officer marked down that he didn't have.

I have no problem with the producer, but I do have a problem when the form could change a kids life and they can't be bothered to fill it in properly. Evil or Very Mad

Stephanie, are you a Police officer????????

Sounds like a Police do no wrong response from you?

I got stopped once, about 20 years ago, the Police looked at my car, decided it must be good for a nicking and stopped me.

All documents present and correct, rubber in all four corners etc etc.

Then I was asked, "why did your reversing lights briefly, come on when you stopped?"........"errrr 'cos its an automatic and you have to go through reverse to get to park!" I replied.

So in best not to be out done by someone just 'cos they aint breaking any laws mode, I was told in the strictest terms, to get a proper tax disc holder, as my tax disc was displayed by means of a crushed headlamp bulb box wedged between the disc and the dash.

I have no problem with the Police using their intuition to stop cars/bikes to try and pick out the ones who break the law, but, they need to be prepared to accept thhat sometimes they are wrong.

PS. I'm an ex-Special Constable, and I KNOW what goes on inside the Police force, I could tell you stories about being parked up observing traffic with a PC at the wheel......who is asleep! The Police are not infallible!

PPS. Hopefully, as of tommorow he won't need his L plates and he won't be out on that bike again.....its test time tommorow.[/i]

We are talking about a 17 year old who has been bought up not to question authority.

Even my wife who is in her 40's said she would not think to check a form filled in by a Police officer.

I don't think it is reasonable to ask a 17 year old to double check a Police officers work........do you?

How has this thread got side tracked?

The issue I was raising was that the officer stated that the bike looked too old for the reg plate, when the bike is still current and you could buy an identical one new, now.

......What does he know .....nothing clearly.

now maybe he was just fishing, to see how he reacted when put on the spot, as little 50cc moto-cross bikes are very nickable, and someone could have put a false plate on.

I live in the town centre, there are numerous cars who speed down my street regularly, and there is a bike, who regularly comes around the corner, lifts his front wheel into the air, and keeps it there almost half-way down the street. There is a cut through, which is no entry except busses, but LOADS of people come through there all the time. The Police, could and should, clean up there but nothing is done.

What is it with the karma machine, I had a Gold Blob earlier now its gone Crying or Very sad

Well said, even then at that moment, it could have been quite intimidating getting pulled over by the police and the last thing you probably think of was to check the slip that these officers must fill in everyday.........EVERYDAY!

It's pure ignorance I say. Although I might sound biased, there are a lot if fcuking idiots in the police...

I've never been done or pulled once in 7 1/2 years of driving. I've had my bike since July, and been stopped twice for NO reason other than a spot check and been followed, once right to my garage...Explain that other than the fcukers had nothing better to do with there time other than to waste mines! Evil or Very Mad

I am not a cop, I'm also not called Stephanie despite what my username says, I can thank Korn for changing it. Laughing

I am not saying the police do no wrong as I am not saying that they were right, they should have filled it in correctly especially something which fucking it up could cost his license.

I'm probably just saying that he should have checked it when the cop gave it to him as I'd be sceptical about had the cop filled it out correctly, because a small error like him not ticking the right boxes could cause problems later. But I'd check any form quickly when given it cos I'm just sceptical about most things and people. Probably something to do with me being used to pointing when they've fucked up spelling my name and/or address. Razz

If we should all be able to double check a Police officers work, does that mean we are all trained, and qualified as Police officers?

Stephanie, sorry to refer to you as stephanie, if it is not your name, but I only have your username to go on......You could put your real name in your signature, if its a problem. Come on Captain Obvious Rolling Eyes

glad to hear we pretty much agree, other than that I do not feel that an intimdated 17 year old is in a position to check or question a Police oficers work.........glad I was there to sort it.

Paul, I'm sure he'll do fine.

He's not one for spending time on here, he's too active and busy. But he could do with some sensible mates with proper bikes to ride with, to get him away from the 'ped boys, he tends to hang out with.

Regarding the L plates thing, yes it was poor by the police, but I think the important thing is that your son takes it as a learning point that people do make mistakes, deliberate or otherwise, and checks in future.

If you feel so strongly, go and complain! Seriously....

kasandrich, just from you posts you seem like you could cause a scene at your local cop-shop! Laughing

I got an apology from head of Strathclyde police when I was 15 for wrongly identified and thrown into the back of a meet-wagon, then questioned for 10mins about who I was and where I was going. (some trouble kicked of where I lived) There faces dropped when I told them my age.....

Yes, I suppose I am biased! Laughing

Korn has locked me from editting it, might be something to do with my signature containing " <Kornel> I was checking out this guys cock in the bogs" which I really had no idea was actually Shaunella pretending to be Korn. Razz

Wow,.....I'm not suggesting it was deliberate! That is a whole different story, no I would like it clear that i am not suggesting it was deliberate, merely "without due care and attention" to coin a Police phrase.

Well, I for one have a problem with them giving him a producer as there is no need for it. The police stopped him and checked his registration number. This tells them the following information:

1) If the vehicle is taxed.
2) Who it is registered to and therefore.
3) If they have a licence.
4) If there is an insurance policy listed for that vehicle.
5) If the vehicle is MOTed (as necessary)

Simply asking the person they have stopped their name, address and date of birth should be perfectly sufficient to ensure the bike is not stolen as it will tally with the database, the other information is then already established.

OK, the database may not be up to date for everyone they stop, but it will be for most people. Therefore the only good reason they have to give you a producer is to cause you inconvenience. To me this is not the polices job, if the bike checked out OK and he was not breaking any laws he should have been left to go about his business.

The police will justify their position by stating that "You must provide your driving licence etc. when required to by an officer of the law. It is an acceptable defence if this is not possible to produce it at a nominated police station within seven days" or words to that effect. To my mind, just because they have the power to do so does not mean they have to.

Back on-topic, you are correct. A lot of coppers know f-all about bikes. It can work the other way too, a mate of mine is regularly stopped on his BSA trials bike which has knobbly 'not for road use' tyres, a straight-through trials exhaust system (read loud!), a single filament 4" position lamp, a squeezy bulb horn and a number plate consisting of an inch stripe of black paint on the rear mudguard with the number tip-exed on. All of these points are illegal but the coppers never notice them.

Another mate of mine got a fine for not displaying L-plates or having a CBT certificate. He was given this fine notice by a copper who stopped him whilst he was riding his GSXR750/1100 with his wife on pillion! Needless to say the copper in question was given a sharp clout athwart the lughole by his sergeant when my mate took his paperwork in to the police station.

I have also been grilled extensivley as to the whereabouts of my CBT certificate on handing over my full licence when they stopped me on my Jawa 350. Rolling Eyes

Send him the 8 miles or so down my way. Me and Gazdaman are sensible most of the time, honest Rolling Eyes When i get my ER5 i'll come up and say hello. Or maybe in a couple of weeks we will come up for a little ride on a sunday or something?

Well said Stinweel,

In defence of the Police, I don't know how quick and efficient the database updates are, his previous Insurance expired midnight 30/12/2004, and the intention was that it was not to go back on the road, as he took his test 4/1/2005, (on a school bike), but unfortunately failed, (foot down on the u turn), so his old 'ped was reinstated as a temporary measure, the insurance was taken out 5/1/2005, but it was made clear it was temporary, with a view to moving him over to his ER5 when his test is passed. So he is on a cover note at the moment.

.....But the CBT was the other thing, they didn't ask for it, but we tok it along anyway.......just more evidence, that the officer didn't know what he was doing.

If I am correct, the light and the horn are not a problem, but the number plate, the tyres and the exhaust are...
