Hi Folks,

My bike doesn't have a centre stand. Bit of a downer when it comes to maintenance. I borrowed a friend's rear paddock stand to lift the rear wheel, which was great.....until I dropped the bloody bike trying to get it back on two wheels! (luckily no damage)

Firstly, is there a technique I should use when on my own for getting the bike off a rear paddock stand without dropping it?

I thought about trying to get a paddock stand which lifts the bike in the middle like a centre stand. I seem to remember seeing them at the NEC last year, but I didnt take any details. Can anyone recommend anything (or are they crap?).

Thanks in advance

Tony

They are called Abba Stands and are pretty good for the money etc... they are available from most bike shops so just to a google search for them etc and all will be revealed.

Rear paddock stands, using them on your own is a bit of a technique, but if I could safely put my R6 on and off the stand on my own, then anyone can Laughing

Just don't come near me when I try to stick the WR400 or KTM on my MX paddock stand, lost count of how many times the bike has fallen off that Laughing

I got a 'fake' Abba stand from ebay - same principle but it has generic fittings rather than needing a specific fitting kit as I believe a proper Abba stand does. Little bit cheaper as well.

Easy to operate on your own, which is the main reason I got it.

It does seem that the technique for getting a bike onto a paddock stand by yourself is all about confidence, but I'm not confident I can catch the weight if it cocks up, so Abba for me. Smile

I used to have a micron 'cup' style stand and always got someone to steady the bike when I used it. I've now got a Harris 'bobbin' one and it is easy peasy using it on your own.

Why don't you just leave the sidestand down, so when the bike comes off the paddock stand it won't drop. It's always worked for me.

When i put my bike up on the stand I hold the grab-rail which keeps it vertical. When I put it back down I do the same and always make sure I keep pressure pushing in the direction of the sidestand. I haven't dropped it...yet. Thumbs Up

Not if you've got the front wheel turned to the left which would be obvious ma'am. Wink

Stand on left of bike with both hands on the bars, right foot on floor by paddock stand and push the bike forward.

I just put the bike on its sidestand and push the back-end over towards the sidestand so the back wheel lifts in the air. I then slide a prop-stand (axle stand) under the swingarm to hold it there. You could just as easily use a bit of wood or a brick. Kick it out once you are finished and the bike lands on its wheels. You can do a similar thing with the front wheel.

If it works on my supermoto, a sportier bike should be a piece of piss.

My scooter dosent have a center stand. When I want to change a wheel/tyre I simply get 6 bricks. Tower them like "Jenga" and then lift the back end of the bike over the bricks and onto the engine guard. it does the trick but I dont think big bikes have engine guards do they Thinking

Just get a couple of bits of rope, and tie them to the handle bars and to heavy things in the garage so the bike is supported Laughing

Failing that, Raid the bedrooms and get the matresses to lay at each side before you drop it off the paddock.
