I thought my brakes where getting bald and had a look and they looked bald
only when i got the torch out and had a proper look i found they had quite a bit left
they dont work that good tho
only when ur going fast and pull hard do they really bite
i was thinking if the lever maybe needs oiling or new fluid maybe ?

I would take brakes off but don't bleed them as yet because it could be just down to surface rust or solidified crap from the road around the pistons. So buy some actuall brake cleaner and get a hard bristled brush (nothing metallic) better still an old tooth brush or something similar and so start scrubbing. The pistons themselves should be able move them back with only your thumbs pushing on them and, if not, then start spraying brake cleaner and scrub off the muck/rust from the pistons.

P.S. With the brake calipers off and pad removed for service and be carefull pressing on the brake lever because if the pistons come right out you'll have brake fluid all over the place and that stuff will eat through paint if the surface is NOT protected. Just bring them out far enough for you to work on them and that would be the pistons sticking out about 20-25mm at the most.

Check your brake fluid level as it may have dropped a bit and so add some Dot 4 (if that's whats recommended in your manual) to bring it back up to max level.

Try tie wrapping the brake lever back and leave it over night just in case there's an air bubble or 2 trapped in the brake hose. Next morning don't remove the tie wrap straight away but use a screwdriver or a small metal bar and starting tapping on the brake hose from the bottom upwards to help remove any remaining air bubbles rise to the top.

It could be a case that your tough rubberised brake hoses itself requires to be replaced because it's now expanding to much and therefore the pressure is not great enough to push the pistons properly. Replace them with steel braided brake hoses as they will never get that problem.

Your front brake lever pushes on a button/piston at the side of the master brake cylinder and increases the pressure within it and so oiling the brake lever will really do nothing for it if you've got a spungy feeling from the brakes.
