Weird overheat problem, DT125

Water has been pooring out of my DT for ages, ive had to top it up almost dayley to aviod overheat. today i finally got around to having a look at it....
at the rear of the bike theres a little transparent bottle with two tubes labeled "coolent" one tube is going into it (from the cooling system) and the other is just an overflow. whenever the revs get high too much water gets pumped into the poor little bottle and it overflows Sad
this happens untill theres practically no water left in the radiator, a real pain in the arse, ive consulted my haynes manual and theres apsolutly nothing in it! the little bottle in question only gets a small mention at the beggining which isnt any help Sad
any advice apprciated !

That is rather unusual.

Are you topping it up when its hot or cold? Cooling systems should only be opened at all when cold.

Is the filler cap loose? Its a pressure cap, if its loose or not pressurising your coolant will boil.

Otherwise, could be a blown head gasket. Any white smoke out the exhaust?

The head gasket has blown between the combustion chamber and the water jacket thus pressurizing the coolant system and filling the bottle / overflowing.

Agreed. Sounds like a blown head gasket. Being a 2-stroke this isn't as big a deal as it is on some vehicles.

Replacing it is a job that someone with a basic knowlege of mechanics could easily do in half a day the first time, no more than an hour if they have done it before. The longest bit of the job would most likley be taking the plastics/tank on and off to get at it.

I would sort it sonner or later, i left my derbi with a blown head gasket and it ended up warping the head.

Check the cap, you shoudl be able to drain teh water and see oil in it if the head gasket is leaking. they only cheap change it anyway lol Wink

Not on a 2 stroker mate, theres nothing up top to oil Very Happy

Also something to check out is any damage to the head / bore caused by the escaping gasses, they can literally burn a channel if left for some time.

I take it that'd be on yer RGV then Frosty. That's the main reason I stopped racing mine. If there's a 250 class, then the paddock is full of RGV "mechanics" lol. Very Happy

It can also mean that you have air in the system, let it cool down then add water, start it up, get it warm, check the level, top it up when it drops (thermostat opens) and it should cure it, if not then head gasket it is i am afraid Confused

turns out i had blown my head gasket, fitted a new one and the bike runs a little better, but its still pissing water out the back end !

A DT125, that brings back fond memories.

Sounds like the head is warped now, as mentioned earlier.

A local engineering firm will skim it flat for you.

yeah i thought that, but it seems to be sealed, before you could clearly see where oil had come through the seal, but now theres nothing Sad
i will probably take a look at my termostat and pump before trying a skim!

w00t, got the bike working. re-sealed the top and bottom gaskets with new sealer from halfords, and a fucking hard time with the piston rings but lesson learned.
