Ok, this is more of a vent but if you are a regular user of 2 lane motorways or dual carraigeways you'll understand...

I go to work at peak times, rush hour 7:30 onwards going to work and after 5pm going home... (yes, pencil pusher/office worker Rolling Eyes )

2 days ago going home, a truck pulled out to overtake another truck, then another, then another, then another......... 5 miles later (thats a whole 5 MILES!! Evil or Very Mad ) he had finally managed...just....to get by these fellow truckers whilst causing a huge fcukin tail back...during rush hour, then again this morning, same idea but ONLY 3 miles to overtake 2 other trucks..

Should this not be banned?? Especially rush hour! They can't go over 60 anyway so why are they in such a rush to get by another truck whilst causing aggro and frustration behind!!?? I suppose this is just one of the reasons I hate driving. I get it everyday. Then you get the idiots that pull out to overtake another truck when the road is clear behind my car......WTF !!!!! It takes me 5 seconds to get by 1 truck but takes you an age!!!! Just let me fcukin past?? Evil or Very Mad

Then there are the trucks that pull out, get half way by then can't make it and pull back in.......ARGH !!!!!

Surely you can see where I'm coming from. Personally I think this should be banned from 7am-9am and 4pm-6:30/7pm... You not think?

Then I would get to work in a dam slight better mood than I normally do.....phew, rant over!!

I guess thats why he didn't go down the middle.

But I know where your coming from, its very annoying when I'm driving back up home, its already a long enough drive (over 3 hours).

If you don't like it that much though, use the bike more. Wink

Had a similar experience when I was travelling to look at my bike.
Heading down the M74/A74/M6 when it was two lanes four lorries were infront of us. I was waiting for the A66 turn off.
Just as I came up to overtake the 4 lorries the last one pulled out and carried on to overtake the other three at maybe 2mph more than the others Rolling Eyes
Here's me sitting behind one lorry with a tail back behind me and 3 lorries on my inside. I was shitting myself that I'd miss my turn off and have to travel down the motorway just to find another exit and come all the way back again.

I read in a news article on Pistonheads.com recently that they are trying to ban lorries from overtaking when there are only two lanes. Three lanes, not so much of a problem as there is an extra lane to enable cars to get past. The trucking union (or whatever it is formally known as), are arguing that if a lorry cannot over take another lorry, then the flow of HGV traffic will only be as fast as the slowest vehicle. So who knows, you may get your wish! Razz

would you rather a bunch of truckers driving at the same pace of the slowest or everyone else being slow when a lorry can't really overtake?

Can't say I find them a problem, although I haven't been in a car since I passed my test. On the bike, I'd just hold back and wait. Patience is a virtue Smile Wink

Can see how they would be annoying to some but I'm too laid back to bother.

Europe has a better way of handling this. I know in some countries lorries are banned at certain times of day and most travel at night for shop deliveries etc..

Ok, so doing that here would change the working hours for some people, but would that be a bad thing to spread out the load on road usage. It'd also clear away access in towns during the day, no more artics parked up unloading with cars, buses, etc. trying to get past.

Doesn't solve your problem though. On my commute I've noticed setting off or leaving just 10 to 15 mins earlier/llater can make a big difference to the amount and type of traffic I encounter.

Well mines has gone. I've done 30k miles from March, most of my time is spent driving of motorways.

I couldn't care less if there is a que of trucks all doing 55 during rush hour, they ain't going to get to there destination really all that quicker, where as a car....well....try telling me you sit at 70 all the way on the motorway.

I can do a 40min journey to work in 20 mins when the roads are clear, I really do get held up that much. I'm not saying ban over taking completely, but during rush hour when cars out-number trucks, then yes.... have a free period from trucks slowing the major road users down....

Well, I don't think the issue is to ban lorries from overtaking. Maybe upgrade the road or make alternative roads perhaps but hell, it wouldn't and couldn't happen, and if I was a lorry driver, I think I'd be a bit pissed off if the law was enforced.

Where abouts do you work coldo?

Much rather the trucks were all stuck in one lane Very Happy . Should transport more by rail, would certainly remove some car transporters from the roads. I'd like to see spacer lanes between lanes just to enable motorcycles to filter more easily through traffic. Ban all switching of lanes by other motor vehicles where spacer lanes are in use. Now that would be nice.

I try and take the attitude that if I'm in a car it's my problem; if I was on a bike I wouldn't have that problem.

So the benifits I get from taking the car either make up for it or I chose the wrong type of transport.

I can see plenty of down sides to this.

To start with the inside lane speed would be limited to the slowest vehicle. on that section of road. So the truck may be able to get up to it's limits going down a hill... but a truck on the next hill is doing 40mph, so the whole inside lane will have to do that.

Now, you're coming onto a motorway with free flowing traffic doing 70-90mph, but there's a constant stream in the inside lane doing 40mph. Going to be interesting. The same with coming off the motorway. Also it will push out plenty of slower vehicles into the middle lane, as they will now be being held up all the time, rather than just when overtaking.

to counter the slower cars having to go into the middle lane, there should be a 10 car gap space between trucks. this will give space for cars to over take and then move back into the first lane. keeping the the 10 car gap will make driving more fun for them aswell because its stimulating.

There is a speed limit on a motorway for a reason.....

If trucks can't get to that or maintain that speed then maybe the government should be looking at that. It's ridiculous to think that there is a car doing 70mph up a hill and a truck only doing 40...
Ok, so they will be in different lanes but say a quicker lorry thinks, Mmmmm I'll pull out and A: Doesn't look or B: Doesn't see you and pulls out then your right on the brakes or into that back of the lorry...Thats a 30mph difference for fecks sake!!

Greg, I work just off the M,way near Hamilton, coming from the M74. It's a 20-25 mile stretch of 2 lane M,way. Yes I can take the roads off the M,way but then I'm slowed down to 30 going thro the towns that surround that road..

If there was to be a ban in place, then maybe trucks would stop traveling at that time and use the slots in between rush hour traffic??

Ok, I'm abit pissed off but so would you had just finished a stressful day at work and all you want to do is get home and relax. If I was on the bike I would just scoot up the middle giving the burdie on the way by.... Middle Finger Very Happy

*pats colin on back*

I've had a hard day too. Finished Uni at 9.30 and have had nothing to do since then. *sigh*

Wink

Trouble is, its not up to the lorry drivers, they have to be in certain places at certain times, otherwise, there may be no groceries at the time you want them from tesco Razz

Heh heh, I'm studying mechanical engineering.

I know what you mean when you say "you'll see what I mean". I'm construction site based, so REALLY hope it isn't edinburgh based like last summer was. Because the glasgow to edinburgh route is the slowest mo fo of a road ever.

I'll take the company car though Wink

Tried it on the bike the other day, filtering at 30mph is certainly an eye opener!!!

I think it would be better to remove the speed limiter that most lorrys have, give a bit of extra speed for overtaking. I've got a friend who is a long distance goods vehicle driver, and he can only deliver to certain places within a certain time frame, e.g. business hours.

I'm generally of the opinion that car drivers need to change the music that they listen to, and calm down a little bit, Instead of driving with a hot head all the time.

As the Honda advert says, "Aren't we all just trying to get somewhere?"

I drive lorries! Twisted Evil Wink

Now, fair enough, mine are 7.5tonners which means that I can use the outside lane if I wish. And they aren't speed limited to 56mph either.

The thing with driving anything large is that if you have to slow down, say because you're unladen but the truck in front isn't, it takes an age some times to regain the speed.

There are some incredibly wanky car drivers out there, people who have no conception of stopping distances, you leave a safe stopping gap between you and the car in front approaching slower traffic.

What happens? Idiot rep man in his BMW, suddenly pulls infront of you cutting eight feet off you're stopping distance.

Which funnily enough is exactly the same distance that you squash his car by.

Laughing

Yes, I'm sure there are alot of rep drivers that skid past going way to quick and cut infront of you not leaving a nice, safe distance but you must see it from a car drivers point of view... especially one that does 30k miles a year mainly on a 2-lane stretch of M,way?? Confused
