Right, let's start a row Wink

Don't use Instant Gasket. There's a chance that a bubble of the stuff could set and find it's way into an oil passage with the obvious results.

For crankcase halves I use Blue Hylomar, formulated by Rolls Royce for use on their aero engines. You just need the merest trace - dribble it along the joins and then wipe it smooth with a finger getting rid of any lumps or bubbles. You'll get it from most car spares places and probably Halfords.

For base gaskets, side covers and cam boxes I use ordinary grease - again the merest smear. Dip a finger in the grease and then draw the gasket round between finger and thumb so it's basically just moist with grease. The gasket does the sealing, the grease just makes it easier to get it off next time. If any grease does get inside it'll just get washed away by the oil.

Head gaskets I put on dry.

I'm not saying this is definitive, but it's how I've done things for 30 odd years and never had any problems. I've seen two-strokes siezed up by over-enthusiastic use of Red hermetite blocking the oil jets.

Hi

KR1S is a 2 stroke and has no oil passages, so instant gasket blocking oil passages is not a problem. Blue Hylomar is just an instant gasket, and I do wonder when Rolls Royce last used the stuff.

Yammabond does have a very good reputation. Seen people recommending using it on Alfas as it is better than the more commonly available instant gaskets.

All the best

Keith

I was thinking more of the sort of stuff that's like bathroom sealant, sets rubbery and you can pull a long string of it off, definitely a no-no in my book Thumbs Down

Yammabond gets my Thumbs Up ace for timing cover cases on gensets, I also use blue hylomar when yammabond has gone, used with care like it was intended it should not cause problems, applying it with a jcb sized finger is when the problems sometimes start, this would also include the likes of hylomar and yammabond, apply too much of any these products and you may wish you never used it if you are real unlucky.
