Hi everyone, I need to decarbonize my exhaust but the bolts have seized the the allen heads holding the bracket have also seized on. The bike was made in 2001 and the exhaust has never been removed so you can imagine all the rust on them plus the first owner resprayed the whole zast pipe with black heatproof paint.

Is there anything good for unlocking the nuts? I've already drowned the poor sods on WD40 and some stuff called sealit bang or something my mum suggested.

Also what would be even better because I'm lazy is there anyway of decarbonizing the exhaust without removing it?

The matter of decarbonising it without removing it is very simple. The real problem is getting yourself inside it with a hand lamp so that you can do the job. Be sure to wear a face mask and goggles.

The problem being it's a snake bite exhaust meaning its at a very hard to get to angle.

Edit: what about a blow torch round the outside of it would that do anything?

You can either do the following;

1.) For a moment touch the bolt with a soldering iron to make the bolt expand a little bit fom the heat so as to break the rust.

or

2.) Use an impact driver with an appropriate allan key fitting while keeping the nut from moving as that will help to get it going.

Yep, that'll warm the aluminium of the cylinder and it'll expand, making the bolt free-er in the hole. Don't torch the bolt or that will expand and grip tighter.

sorry to hijack but its relevent...

When waveing a blo torch arround the bike... how likely is it that you could damage/warp the cyliner head, the studs afaik are just blank space behind, but the exhaust gasket would take up any warpage? any precautions?

got to do mine as well, just with less stud to move about Very Happy

Hi, Could you redefine which part I should heat up do you mean the surrounding area of the bolts?
Also will warming the exhaust do anything to decarbonize it as I just need a tempory solution as the bike will be garaged next month when I get my new 125.
