gear changing

ive been riding my new rs125 for 5 days now and sorta got the hang of gears its just taking off some times i take off in 3rd forgetting what gear im in when i stop and end up in the middle of a roundabout trying to get it in to first , i think i might need one of the gear counters . L.C.D screans to tell me what gear im in does any one no were to get em from and are they easy to fit>?

You dont need a gear counter, just use the rev counter as an indication.

Speed and RPM, when I am in third at say 30mph I am at 3000 RPM for instance... catch my drift?

When you want first just kick it right down....

Have you done a CBT Should all be explained in there.. if you're struggling maybe you should re-do a CBT on geared bike or get some lessons or something before you do yourself or someone else an injury?

No offence intended, just you sound a bit of a danger (everyone is when they start out) and maybe you should get some lessons in

Hi

It is a 125 2 squeak, and quite a high geared one. Not really much chance of moving off in anything other than first, as you have discovered.

However on most bikes if you are in first gear and push the gear lever down to moves without doing anything. No click, just an easy movement. If the higher gears it will only move with a noticeable click (or not move at all, as sometimes the boxes do not like shifting when you are not moving).

As such double check you are in first this way, and then you know whether to try changing down.

Gears are pretty easy really. Concentrate, you should know what gear you are in by the sound/speed you are doing. If you are coming to a stop use the gears to slow you down *burble zorst*. If you are at a total standstill clutch in and knock it down, check it is in first by letting in the clutch. Basic stuff tbh mate.

Simple thing to do is allways change down to second, let the clutch out, if you need to slow down any more pull the clutch in and come to a stop if neccicary.

This engine braking is helpful at low speed, and makes it impossible to accidentally pull away in 3rd. worst thing the bike will do is go into neutral but refuse to go into first. In which case you have the neutral light acting as a gear indicator.

This will also stop the problem alot of 2 strokes get where they cut out when you come to a stop without engine braking and try to block shift.

I always do the little down push to check it wont go any further. Sometimes though you have to move the wheels before it will go down a gear so that can be confusing. I just click it up a little into neutral when waiting then i know for sure.

it is pretty important to be in the right gear before a corner as if you are coming into a corner at speed and realise your in the wrong gear and try to change it can upset the balance of the bike coming off drive! so be carefull
When coming to a stop I normally use the gears to slow down but when I get to about 20-15 MPH I put the clutch in and keep kicking down untill it won't go any further (no harm in tapping it a few times just to re-assure your self it's hit the first gear slot) and by the time you come to a stop you are in first and ready to move away with out having to worry.

I was told that when you stop, as you go to put your foot down to support yourself thats when you click it into first.
(I don't do that now tho )
