This bike has been so disappointing, within a week of ownership (ok my fault) the engine blew up sending em down the A20 with a locked back tyre. A week later the engine seized after I had just had it repaired, luckily under warranty. 600 miles of bedding in later, I was out last night for a very very cold blast and on the middle of a roundabout the engine slowly drowned out leaving me stranded while being closely followed by two cars. I had to wave them past while they shook their fists at em as if I had stalled.

Anyway, lift the tank and tested the spark plug on the frame, no spark. So after a push up the hill my bike got home to bed, and I've not fixed it this morning, because I don't have it to get me to the spares place. Guess I'll have to leave it to the weekend.

I hate when that happens, it always comes in groups doesn’t it?

Bloody Mito was the same.
Must admit Aprilia do have the durability.

and to top it, in the rush to get home I forgot to pick up the bolt that holds the tank down at the front... Doh! and I've already visited where it broke down last night but someone has obviously cleaned... double Doh! Rolling Eyes

Damn that sucks.

But might just be a stint of bad luck.

Remember that to a degree if you bought it from a dealership you might be able to argue something with them about the fact its falling apart around you. Considering a locked backwheel on a A road could equal a very intimate relationship with the tarmac. And engine dying on a roundabout isnt brilliant either.

You'll probably need to get it fixed whatever you plan to do, selling a broken bike (even with a minor problem) will mean you lose tons of value as opposed to a working one.

Not meaning to sound sarcastic but have you checked the amount of fuel in the tank? I had an RS for a short while and whilst out on it, suffered the same as you as I leant into bends. I thought I had dirt in the fuel so I cleaned out the tank and fitted a fuel filter. After I had filled the tank up it ran perfectly. I believe it looked and sounded like there was plenty of fuel in the tank but in fact it was low. Might not be your problem but worth checking.

Nah, I'll keep it, I bought it private anyway, and that was a few months ago. I just can't believe how many times I've come home not riding the bike I left my home with. I'm hoping a new HT lead will fix everything.

Checklist:
- definately has petrol running through
- oil is fine
- battery is fine
- changed spark plug, still no spark

Nothing else could affect the spark surely. If the engine had seized then I'd still be getting a spark, unless I was unlucky enough for both the spark to go and the engine seizing at once? That would be amusing. I suppose I could try and find a compression tester, I don't know how else to test if it's seized. Any ideas?

No I've definately checked the fuel, and tried running the bike with the tap on and then on reserve. No luck.

Well, if its new... you can return a bike within a reasonable time and they can take off a reasonable ammount for the time you have used the bike...
Personally i'd wan't it gone, tis orrible haveing a bike when your just waiting for it to go bang Sad

A common one to go is the kill switch, the switch is easy to break especially if used often, maybe a fuse, though if it is then keep an eye out for it...

the electrics are always a source of problems

the kill switch could be shorting so its on all the time, need a multi meter

check the connection under the headstock bit infront of the water resivoir

keep ur head up, i had loads of silly probs wit my RS

the cogs in the gear box broke (random thing)
brake seal went
a bearing half siezed

but wen i sent it to peter knight he said it was all fine

worth the money to put my confidence bac in it

had similar trouble wit my ZXR but now all is fine and smiles bac on my face

Edit : the slowness of my mind workin allowed zero to post the same stuff 8 mins earlier Laughing

Checked all fuses earlier, and the kill switch was working last night, any other suggestions? It's just not firing up

the kill switch still lets the engine turn but jus stops the spark i think so if its shorted it wont spark but will sound like it is turnin over

u taken the plug out and sparked it off the casing so u can see the spark??

no spark can only be electrical in my eyes

loose connection or kill switch (leads of course) or the actual plug

Yeah I tried the spark plug on the frame, no spark on either of the spark plugs I had with me. Guess i'll have to get the electrical tester out then... after my basketball match. Thanks Smile

I'm beginning to think doing my test soon and just buying a 400 might be a good idea now, at least I'd get some money back on the RS if I just got a ZXR

only about £5 if that (maplins do them) tis a worthy investment...

Yep a mate has a zxr 400, turned up at my house, engine off, starter button to get in in the garrage, engine ded... 15minutes of swearing later worked out it was the kill switch, 30minutes more swearing (fiddley!) all fixed... soldering iron is something worth considering too... same symptoms though, working one minute, not the next, no spark, starter working, ignition working, no blown fuses...

How about a blown/faulty fuse or the electrical wires going into the connection block that connects to the fuse box could be loose/not fully inserted or it requires a spray of WD40 to get the water/muck out of them because it's grounding the electricity.

In regards to the original problem that was supposedly fixed I suspect after discussing it with my pal, who is knowledgable about those type of bikes, that it was due to an oil pump failure or the cam chain failed.

No spark?

either there is a break in the wiring somewhere (unlikely as u sputtered to a halt mid ride), or either the CDI, related gear or coil is farked.

Id point my finger at the CDI as a bad coil would most likely spark even if its horrid weak and yellow!

Check out the wiring to the CDI, the pickup coil. Check your ignition coil against the figures quoted by the factory.

So its stopped working 3 times, thats either very unlucky, faulty engine or a not very 'careing' owner.

I know of people who have covered 20000km on a rs125 before it needs rebuilding, although most do tend to blow up at 10-15k depending on how the previous owner treated it.

You have to treat these engines with respect, after all, they produce almost as much power per cc as a forumla 1 car does, and they arn't the most reliable of 4t's are they?!?!?

Having an RS125 is like a lottery
i put the best oil in mine
i always warmed it up (except once)
i hardly ever used to thrash it
but mine has a LONG list of faults finally ending its life with a seized gearbox.
i know several people with RS125 who have had and have not had the same problem.

Hi

Late RS there is a 7.5a fuse from after the regulator / rectifier that provides power to the ignition system

Has the bike been a pain to start recently, and then bump started fine? If so (well, even if not) check the clearance between the flywheel and the ignition pickup. This should be 0.5mm. Too wide and it will not trigger the ignition system to provide a spark, firstly noticeable at low revs such as when using the starter motor (bump starting will tend to turn the engine over more quickly).

All the best

Keith

When I had my RS I found this forum very helpful, there is a guy who races them on it and what he doesn't know about them isn't worth knowing.

https://www.apriliaforum.com/forums

Make sure you don't forget to come back here after I don't want blaming for loosing members, especially female ones, you are rare enough as it is.
