Vauxhall astra 1.7 turbo diesel van help

me dad decided too serivce his own van today ,
drained oil ect,
did the fuel filter i come out house and hes cranking it over, i said to him did u fill the filter up before u put it in (wht we doo at work on the jcbs ect dont know if it apllys to vans too though)
he said noo,
now it wont start and ive looked hes looked and next doors looked just wondering if anyone knows were the maual lift pump is on theses things,
think hes got air in the injector pump or soemthing cos its just not workin lol,

i use to work on vw van which dont have a prim pump we use to fill the filter up and then hose with a hand pump on it. but you could always put a hose on the filter and suck on it to draw the fuel through

is this the old vauxhall lump or the Isuzu engine

did he change the fuel filter 0 rings
