I can't make up my mind, i'm 6ft tall, and don't want to make the bike look like a moped, but i want a bit of torque without going stupid speeds, consequently losing my license.

The only thing against a decent 'moto is the price

GRRRRR!!!!

If your ever planning to go more than 50miles at a time the supermoto will be an uncomfortable choice... you'll still loose your licence stopieing at every red light and wheelying at every greenun Razz

SV will do everything, good bike, comfy, tours well, enough power to frighten yourself.

As allways depends on what its being used for...

I will use it for commuting to/from college and work everyday, a round up mileage of around 50 miles per day,

and yes, verrry valid point about the supermoto......

Love how you've decided on a sv650, a particular bike, and then a design of motorcycle, "supermoto" Laughing

Whats wrong with the old bandit? Or an earlier fazer?

Just curious thats all Smile Thumbs Up Karma

A supermoto will be better for commuting in town (providing it's not too highly tuned), the sv for doing distance out of town.

or what about a Suzuki GSX600F (Teapot)

Cheap reliable, quick enough, tour OK, faring to keep the weather off you for commuting.....an underrated bike. But a tad less sporty than an SV

You have limited your choices somewhat.

S moto's are for wheelies n' sh1t is that what you want it for?

If not then you need the SV. There are plenty of bikes for taller folk (something I don't have to worry about Very Happy ) to think about. SV650 is quite tall though.

Go to a show room and sit on a few bikes to see what fits. Thumbs Up

If you look at some of the more comercial supermotos or those dervied from bigger enduro style bikes they can be quite good for general riding.

The thin and high position with a torquey engine also makes them ideal for traffic.

The gsx600 may be underrated bike, but damn, it's ugly.

I have chose not to opt for a bandit or similiar, because i like low down grunt, and plus Sv's sound ace! Very Happy

The reason i just said "Supermoto" is because I can't make up my bloody mind!!!!

However, if I do get an Sv, it will need restricting, and buggered if im paying £200 to halve the power output.... Anybody out there know how large the holes in the washers are? Laughing Laughing Laughing

Thanks for all the help Thumbs Up

Why not get a slightly smaller bike 'till your licence goes full-bore then sell it and get a bigger one?

For example, a Suzuki DR350 trail bike produces just shy of 33bhp and there are plenty on the second hand market, been making them a lot of years.

If you are determined to get a bigger bike how's about a compromise? The Yamaha TDM has a big twin motor as used in their TRX sportsbike but a comfy upright riding position and lots of ground clearance. They aren't so popular over here because people like to categorise bikes and this fits in somewhere between a sports-tourer and a street moto. Lots of miles in comfort with a motard 'feel'.

The only issue that I can see with getting a Supermoto (or motocross/enduro) is that you will be parking it in a relatively public place, and the only way that I can see you carrying a hefty chain (or other security device) is on your back, which isn't ideal.

At least with a more traditional motorcycle you would have option of under or over the pillion seat, or even in a tank bag.

the holes in the 33hp restrictors are tiny lol

i have them on my R6 unfortunately and was painful to watch them go in

however it still pulls well and does well over a ton!!

youll find that if its your first big bike its a nice gentle way of breaking into it as i know i wouldnt wana go straight from a 125 to a full blooded R6

still an awesome fast ride tho

I used to have a chain in a little bag that stuck on the pillion seat/the little luggage rack bit. Got the bag with the chain.

me and my mate were having this discussion last night down the pub funilly enough, im gettin a honda fx650 and hes gettin an sv650, both in may. Trust me on this we could argue all day, its all about rpeference and what you want from your bike, i love the sound of a big single and he like the whole V-twin thing. i recon supermotos look better but he disagrees, make your own mind up on it mate, theres so many good points about both. Thumbs Up

SV and supermoto are very different bikes IMO.. they both have + and - 's

You need to work out what you want from a bike then decide which bike to go for after that.

A compromise and you're looking at TDM850's, Street motos like the MZ Bahgira etc.. all good bikes - but it depends what you want from the bike.
