I am going looking for my first bike, a GSXR600 next week with a budget of £2600 and was wondering if anyone could give me some tips on what to look out for and how to handle dealers and private sales.

Should i be able to get a decent bike for this much ?

Not from a dealer Without scrathes etc.

There are loads for that price tho, I wanted 1 ot a r6 as my first but insurance.
Go on bike trader theres a few in that price range and ebay last week had gsx-r 600's for under £2600.
Or you could save ££££ and geta vfr for a starter Very Happy

I am 24 (25 in may) and its got to be a GSXR600,

So you think i should be able to pick a GSXR up for £2600 no problem ?

Anything engine wise i should look out for ? bodywork is pretty self explanitary i think, just check for scratches, dents and signs of a drop .

what is the insurance group on an R1 in comparison to a GSXR600, also what size engine is an R1 and R6 ?

R1 is 1000cc
r6 is 600cc
The engine when going private is 50/50 as unlike a shop you get warranty if it goes wrong so would be good if you knew about bike engines etc to give it a full look over.
I'd rather buy from a shop when getting a bigger bike like a 600cc
You should be able to find one no prob, panels might be perfect but the eninge might not be.

You should be ok with the insurance at that age. Think it's insurance group 14 for r6's and gsx's not to sure

Thanks for the help mate, i think the R1 is way out of my league for insurance Smile

£600 was the insurance quote i got from Bennetts which is not too bad considering the performance of the GSXR600.

I have a bike mechanic mate who is coming to have a look at the bikes with me, and i have also heard that most shops/people do not let you take the bike for a test ride is this true ?

How old are you? Is this the first time you have ever rode a big bike? Quite frankly if it is then recheck whether you feel you are ready for the amount of power. Just because you pass a test does not mean you are Valentino Rossi. Smile

I find it strange that people with little experience of bikes become fixated upon a particular model. You need to ride a few bikes before you can know what sort of bike you like...

...Or is it purely an image thing?

And why is it all new riders always want GSX-Rs? Confused

R1 - Don't make me laugh

Suppose you could get away on a 600, but you would have to be very careful, and expect to mess up (at least) the fairings sooner or later. Thumbs Up

but that's not true my mate went straight to a r6 and that was fine.
It's how you ride a bike and how you feel on a bike othe then that you may scrath the pannel's by normal crashes or dropping it bu that's the same with everything. Thumbs Up

Good advice there. How many bikes have you had then?

If you are going/want to ride hard, get something that won't hurt your wallet when you spin it down the road.

If you want to potter about looking good, in theory you can ride anything and you should be ok.

Remember all it takes is one slip of the throttle, one puddle of diesel, one well-placed manhole cover, one patch of gavel, or one split second of inexperience (which you have plenty of) to send your pride and joy flying down the road. Very Happy

100% agree.

Have you ever ridden a big bike before?

I suggest you go on a few test rides, when bikes are being built with 1400cc it makes 600cc sound like nothing, when in actual fact its a hell of a lot. I know i wouldn't even dream of stepping onto a 600 for at least another 3 years.

Don't be *that* conservative, they aren't life and death. Besides it's only the sports 600's that are scarily fast, seriously from riding my Bandit out the back of the house I have taken to it like a pinch of salt, a couple of months general riding will have me on my confidence hopefully.

I wouldn't even bother with a sports 600 at my age though. Smile

Nope, I think you are just getting the standard " If you go out and buy a high powered sports bike and end up in a hedge don't come crying to us!" speech.

If you want a gixxer fair enough that is your choice but don't assume smaller bikes are inferior. Something like a ZXR400 will still do around 130 mph and will corner on rails(and IMO look very nice).

As for your original question yes you can get a decent GSXR 600 for £2600. There are lots of white and blue ones about (But its not the best colour Laughing ). Don't go for the first one you see!

You sound like just the overconfident sort of bloke who either:

A) Gets on a Gixxer 6 and finds it a handful and takes it easy, but makes out like he's the fastest ever.
or

B) Gets a Gixxer 6 and then crashes.

Not saying that you /are/ of course, only what you sound like to me on the forum.

I am 24. I have a powerful bike. I started on a 125 moved up to a 400 and then a 650. I had each for over a year. I now have a 950cc sportsbike.

We have been there. We have done that. We know how much power and how sharp a GSXR600 is.

A 400 is not a scooter. I had some of the best fun I've ever had on a bike on my little 400. It was a great bike.

But believe me I learned a hell of a lot. I'm not having a go at you because you want a powerful bike, but you do appear to be disregarding the opinions of people who have been there.

Of course that is your perogative, but please don't come on here and start insulting bikes that many of the members here own, and in fact many of the members of this forum have scooters as well. If you don't like scooters, then this isn't the forum for you.

It also amuses me that you have no idea what capacity an R1 is, and yet you appear to know that all 400's suck!

By all means buy a Gixxer 6, but take it easy and be aware that it can out accelerate, out brake and probably out corner most road cars, and 80% of road bikes too - it can bite you.

as long as you understand this and take it easy, then you will be fine.

Anyway, I suggest you have a read of this thread:

Obviously if someone offered me a go, i'd take up the offer. But i wouldn't like to own one.

Get up the cat n fiddle mate, i can GUARANTEE i know people who will completely outride you on a 125 and 400's. Just because you own a 600 it don't make you into some expert rider, good riding comes with experiance. Having a 600 may look good when being cleaned on your drive but who will look the fool when a 125 comes round the outside of you?

I crashed a 125 due to grabbing too much of a handfull...

I'm so glad that wasn't a GSXR6 otherwise the nurse would have to be typing this for me now.

get a blue and white one, they look shit hot.

bennetts isn't the most competitive insurance company, if you phone around I bet it'll get cheaper.

A full power GSXR600 will be one fucker of a powerfull bike and won't hesitate to spit you off.

And the R6 will kill you, but the R1 WANTS to kill you.
