So... looking at yet more 400 bikes, I began turning my attention to the GSX-R 400, which I previously left out for some reason.

I'm quite taken with the 1990 onwards models, however, it begs the question - why ain't I seein' a lot of GSX-R 400s around?

From what I've gathered, like most bikes it was a grey import, but are there other reasons too?

And what's the avalability like for these (beautiful) machines? I've looked around some sites, like AutoTrader and didn't find that many. In fact I only found 6 examples.

I'd love to get my hands on something like a GSX-R400R SP II 1991. It also looks like they're considerably cheaper than the RVF400 I was leaning to, too. About £1000 less for a good one - what's the deal?

The GSXR's (and any other make) werent/arent as popular as the Honda's so you will always see more CBR's & VFR/RVF's about.

The GSXR's arent as reliable as the Honda's if not looked after. As I understand it the Yamaha FZR is the least reliable, Honda's are best and Kawa's/Suzi's about the same, Kawasaki's probably more reliable (certainly easier for parts). This is all dependant on the quality/standard of the individual bike an what sort of life it's had. Also Honda's are as you said imported more than most because of said reliability and therefore trust in them (also parts are therefore easier to get).

The GSXR's (the year's on your looking at) are the best looking 400 to me and can be had for very good condition around £1800 due to lack of itnerest in them. Compared to the RVF all 400's are at least a grand cheaper. Apart from looks the RVF doesnt offer much difference to the others.

Go to https://www.400greybike.co.uk/ for any info you need on 400's. Keep an eye on the for sale section too. That's the best place to find a GSXR, may have to wait for summer month's too. Thumbs Up

They are decent bikes but they are very crampt and uncomfortable and the engines int hem arnt the best. If you are willing to tolerate those two things then they are good bikes! They take many similar parts to the RGV and are essentially an RGV with a 4 stroke engine. That engine isnt quite so good as that in an RVF or CBR but its still decent enough.

Note that the RVFs are, in my opinion, overpriced.

Presumably because they are the newest 400 available; and maybe that they look like an RC45 Smile, they often go for quite a bit.

Is it me, or are these guys trying to catch someone out?

Says it's a 2001 GSXR400 - correct me if I'm wrong, but didn't production stop in 1999? That looks like the 1995 model to me.

Granted it looks mint, but the price tag is way too much.

May have been imported then registered in 2001.

That bike definately IS NOT worth that muchmoney. Also I agree with G's RVF price comment, though they do look good.

I love gixxers, they are my favourite bikes but I just want to point out that everyone says they aren't comfortable at all or at least the old 400's.

They aren't the most comfortable bike. My seat is rock fucking solid. You get used to it after a while. I'm 6'5 and don't find the bike that cramped.

i have a gsxr400sp 1990 model

and so far it has been kind to me

just had it serviced new plugs e.t.c

handles perfectly on the twisties

dated it might be but it still looks fine in my opinion

edit:- i am 5' 11 and my knees cramp up a little after a few hours of riding

it's restricted to 33bhp at the moment same as marc i believe

i hear that in its unrestricted form it flys

I was just looking around for the time being; I'll go for my CBT and Full License in February, hopefully pass the license test. Very Happy

Then I'll most likely go for the GSX-R 400 - they looks the best in my opinion, I won't be riding the bike for long periods of time, so I'm willing to live with the fact they're supposedly uncomfortable, they're also very cheap compared to the other main contender; the RVF400.

But, I only like the 1990 onwards models, the other older models look dated, with that "classic 80s design" which I don't find very appealing. Will be looking to get one from the 1990-1993 range hopefully - I'd rather have that 60 BHP engine than the 53 one. Very Happy

Yeah, but the rear-end looks like a '90 SP model. Maybe he added new bodywork to it to better match his taste.

Won't that affect it's price though; namely lower it?

that i assume is just a single seat unit

hence the removal of the rear pegs

i guess its a 1988 or 1989 model gsxr400r

as it doesnt have upside down forks

defininately pre 1990

might well be an sp though

looks tidy for its age
