hey guys
i sold my zxr400
the bike was to be booked in to have restrictors fitted in by the buyer before he can ride it back to london, the buyer chose a notorious dealership (unwittingly) im afraid and its backfired horribly.
basically i dropped the bike of today once the funds were cleared, the dealer said np's we cant do anything to the bike until monday as we are to busy,i said ok left the mot cert and spare keys etc with them, went away and half hour later realised i had forgotten to take the alarm keyfob.
went back to the shop to find them pissing about with the bike with the seats etc off in the middle of the workshope even tho they werent going to touch it until monday........never thought anymore about it.
got home to be contacted by the buyer to say he has had a phone call from them saying the tyre was the wrong profile, the rear shocks knackered and the front brake and oil needs sorting...this was all within 2 hors max from what i can gather......hmmmn well ive been riding this bike for 6 months and i would have thought i would have noticed if the rear shock etc had of gone, all the bike went in for is to have restrictors fitted.......even if these things were wrong which they are not or werent when i dropped the bike off at 3pm they had no right phoning uke red and telling him.they should have contacted me first,i wold never sell a bike with those sort of things wrong with it and i know for certain they are talking utter shite to get more money out of uke red, they are notorious in norfolk as a shoddy dealer,
me and the buyer have spoken and i have no quarrel with him at all but basically he now owns the bike,we both have receipts, his name is on the v5 etc etc,i have however offered a full refund as i am confident the problems are bullshit as it rode fine there this afternoon and has done for the last 6 months, only problem i have now is it seems i am going to be getting my bike back after those cowboys have had hold of it,god knows what they have done to it,and if they have doen work to it no doubt they will issue a bill even thogh i asked for no work to be done but uke red did.
at the end of the day if i was bastard i could say to the buyer its his problem as he bought "sold as seen",he came and a saw the bike so he knew what he was buying but im willing to take the bike back etc
im just confused on where i go from here, prob could sue them i guess, lol
also whats my bike going to be like when i get it back........
obviously im am hampering my chances of selling my again by saying all this but hey i am truly pissed off,as im sure the buyer is as hes bought a restrictor kit and that.
whats your thoughts? |

If they have done work to the bike WITHOUT the owners permission you are under no obligation to pay them. You can also demand they put the bike back to the state that you left it in before they carried out any unauthorised work.
However make sure you or the new owner didn't give permission before you start demanding this and that and make sure you get all your facts straight.
Might be worth riging Citizen Advice about it.
I know this as when I went to Kwik Fit for 2 new tyres and left the car with them for a couple of hours (as they were busy). On my return I had a bill for just over £200 . They had replaced the rear shocks without my permission. I told them to put the old ones back on as bieng in the trade I KNEW the others were not knackered. But they had dumped them in the skip so basically I had free shocks on the back..
That was over 5 years ago so make sure the law hasn't changed (very doubtfull). ____________________ Andy Sez....

The tyre may well be the wrong profile for this bike, probably will work fine in most cases, in some cases may make the bike handle better, probably slightly worse, but only slightly if it's not too big a change. Not a big issue.
New tyre upto £90 or so, but can get for less. Considered a 'consumable'.
It's easy enough to ride with a knackered rear shock. I've done a trackday with a knackered rear shock; was keeping up in the Fast group, though not doing amazingly well. I did realise something was wrong as it got worse, though thought it was something else at the time.
However this was pushing it a bit at Cadwell park; 100mph with knee down is a bit different to your average road riding.
A second hand original shock can probably be got for £30 or so on ebay, if you can find one.
Front brake pads may well need doing, along with a bleed. Shouldn't be more than £35.
Considered consumable/service item for the bleeding.
An oil change is much hassle and shouldn't cost more than £20 if you're not splashing out.
Would be another 'consumable'.
These are all things that I would definitely check when buying a bike and expect the price to reflect their condition.
I doubt any of them are major worries immediately so would be fine to be ridden for a while, until sorted.
Of course it's very likely they've picked up on some slight problems and blown them out of proportion in an effort to make some quick money . |

I've seen dealers sell bikes with much more with them, which have succesfully avoided any comeback . |

If you have had the money, issued a reciept and transferrred the V5.
.......It ain't your bike anymore, you are just doing the new owner a favour running it to the dealer to have the restrictors fitted (probably illegally I might add, as your insurance is probably only valid while you own the bike!)
You sold it in good faith, its a private sale and the buyers rights are very limited.
in short its not your problem, and having sold it in good faith, and not knowing about any of these faults which are now being reported. ____________________ Richard
