On a more serious note, the small end bearings on those are under a lot of stress as it is, tuning it for more power may not be the best of ideas, especially with the brakes they come with.

I would concentrate on making the engine run as well in its standard state as possible, so make sure the exhaust is crud free, the piston crown is shiny and the ignition timing is bang on the button.

Well, you can improve the performance without changing too many things.

First off, the stock exhaust is pretty shite. Micron makes some pipes that perform fairly well and can be welded to fit for little money, but in my experience they only seem to perform well in the bottom-end to midrange. I personally prefer something thatll increase your maximum rpm over stock at the sake of less torque, so Id recommend either an Allspeed or Nikkon exhaust. They hand-make pipes specifically for the RXS that perform well throughout the rev-range, but are a bit biased for top end.

If you fit a pipe, youll probably wants to fit a cone air filter in place of the standard breather box. Youll then need to tune the carburator to compensate for the pipe and air filter. Probably a good idea to get this done at a shop, unless you know what youre doing.

Lastly, if you either have the cash or the knowledge, you can do some light cylinder work, dremeling out any casting flaws in the transfers, intake and exhaust (of which there are plenty, from what Ive seen). This will improve all round performance a bit without lowering the reliability of the engine.

A step further would be to raise the exhaust port a mm or so. Thisll change the characteristics of your powerband, taking away torque but increasing top-end power. This is what allows me to accelerate past my 9,500 redline and continue to 11,000. Not recommended if you just want a nice all-round bike to ride. I wanted a strong top-end powerband and a high top speed. You might prefer something that doesnt involve slipping the clutch all the time or require changing the rings every 3-4 months Smile.

The biggest increases in performance come from modifying the cylinder, but these changes always lower the lifespan of the engine by a little bit. Really comes down to what you want.
