I have just acquired, for masochistic amusement purposes, a wreck that was said to be a 125, but the accompanying logbook says 75. Now knowing nothing about its previous history, but knowing where I got it from, leads me to wonder just what it is. I have looked around the bike and can find neither Chassis number nor engine number. This could be due to a combination of rust, muck and not knowing where to look. I am looking for help in this direction please. I think the head/barrel look to big to be a 75cc. According to the log book the vin number should be NS81T00*** and the engine number should be NS8M87***.

Right, got the Haynes Vespa manual that covers Sfera's as well. And there were 50,80 and 125 versions of the bike. The Engine numbers should be on the back of the transmission casings just to the left of the wheel (when standing behind the bike).

Edit: Just spotted you posted the numbers from the log book. Engine and frame numbers starting NS8 should be for the 80cc bike.

Thanks for that Dave. Sadly the masochistic amusement seems to have started already. I got your message and straight away went out into my workshop and started scratching the oily, muddy crap away. I found two raised flat areas. One on the main transmission casing (as opposed to its cover) just aft of the suspension mounting boss (this was 12 mm wide and parallel with the wheel spindle and on top of the casting. The other was much bigger (about 45mm square) vertical and right at the back of the main trans. casting. Sadly they both bore no letters/numbers. The question now whether Mr Haynes is doing his usual trick of juggling fact together with fiction, or not? I suppose it is just possible that someone has filed them off, but the surface looks very 'natural' for that to be the case. Or it could be that they were just modern sticky labels like bar codes that you get on jars of jam etc. ...Well it would be cheaper, after all!!
Re. VIN number. What does he say about that?

Engine number is here on just about every scoot, altough its usually quite faint and would grind off pretty easily. VIN will be stamped/etched on the frame somewhere, though the haynes doesn't say where.

Thanks again, Dave. I can feel myself being dragged by the nose towards another contribution towards the Haynes millions. He must have made more out of fiction than Jeffry Archer!!!Which manual is it, please? I will have to strip all the body work off around the headstock, that's where old motorcycles used to have there frame numbers.
Regards
G

D,
What service. You are truly a star! Laughing The engine etc. seems to be seized solid and so I shall try to strip it down to see why, and if it looks "mendable" I shall get one of Mr. Haynes abominations to fill in the fine detail. It looks fairly straight forwards but what the supply of spares will be like I know not. It's M reg. and so it may be a bit long in the tooth for spares.

You can still get quite a few of the Sfera 80 parts off scooter center.
