rev counter on the blink?

my rev counter wont give me corect reading.
even if i give it high revs it only reads about 4k-5k y is this and what can i do about it?

If it is analog (cable) check that it is in properly and hasnt unscrewed itself.

Also, take the cable off the rev counter and rev the engine and see if the cable spins round.

What bike is it?

Thats about as much as i know (being honest), but some bikes have nylon gears that get broken eventually.

check your battery, if your batteries really flat then that could cause it, don't ask me why, mine's analogue and when the battery flattens (weekly occurance) my rev counter starts playing about.
