About to adjust my chain...

Whilest rideing at lowish speed something seems to be snaging slightly, clutch in it does the same, @ 30 it snags a little and @ 40 it stops/is not noticeable...

If its not the chain (i really hope it is) what else could it be appart from brakes? its quite a weird feeling, dosen't feel seruious...

Could be slack chain and so adjust the back wheel to see if that helps.

Just follow what you manual says and you shouldn't go wrong!

Could be the chain, or indeed the chainguard rubbing on the chain if it is a little bent. Check the brakeline and speedo cable are well clear of the front tyre.

I had what appears to be the same and this was it. Try just taking the chainguard off before stripping other, more difficult to get to bits off your bike.

This could also be caused by a stiff link in your chain. A good clean up and re-lube will sort it if this is the problem.

Only just got around to looking at the chain, after takeing the front sropcket cover of and takeing out a huge mass of oil and crap that had built up, includeing a 6mm bolt! (where it came from, dunno..)

WD40 all over the chain, much toothbrush action, eventually came to a completely siezed solid link, the chain is fairly new, i lube it every other time i got out for a ride (when its warm) so was not expecting it.. ive had a really good go at it with the brush and its not moved at all... what i was thinking was getting a clamp with some flat pieces of wood and pressing it into moveing, the gentlest way i can think of moveing it...

Any ideas? i have a mini blowtorch if that would help? (doubt it would, appart from mashing the o-ring)

oh shaft drive.... lovely shaft drive...

Well, iv'e sort of got it moveing, to bend it 50degrees or so ive got it in a G clamp with some spare nuts to lever it, still take quite a bit of force to move it... leting the chain go arround fully will straighten it up again, but not without a crunch, defenately can feel it...

So i'm really not sure what to do with it now... bit less drastic than the blow torch i have a soldering iron, is that worth trying?

I'm useing wd40 because i dont have any parafin or anything, afaik its pretty much the same thing...

I REALLY don't need to be buying a new chain right now Sad

A hammer. It works, chains are tough things.

Keep working at it, loads of lube. I wouldn't try putting any heat into it if it is an o-ring chain.

How near the wear limit are you? Would it stand being one link shorter?

Annoyingly its got loads and loads of adjustment left :/ fitted only a couple of thousand miles ago Evil or Very Mad (just before i got the bike)

The chain is an endless one, theres no feckin way i'm haveing the swingarm off. Thumbs Down i dont have any chain tools either Sad can a master link be added to an endless chain by cuting one of the links off?

Its tricky to get a good swing at the chain to do any hammering Sad

Takes ages to move the chain they way i have Sad Mad surely must be an easyer way? tryed useing alan keys to lever them but it needs way more force than i can put on them... might try with ring spanner extensions... Question Neutral Question

Well, what I would do in your situation would be to take the dodgy link out and replace it with a soft-link (where the keeper plate forces down over the pins). But then I have a chain splitting tool that forces chain links apart which admittedly isn't much help to yourself.

Soft links

A couple of pairs of pliers I found useful too. I really shouldn't have left it outside for that long in January without riding it.

Bah, looks like i'm goona have to spend some money Sad

got a plastacine wd40 bath prepared for the link, will see if that helps it at all... if not...

These soft links? where do you get them from? thinking might get a splint link set, would it need a press to get these on? i'll have to get one anyway, it will probably cost £30 to have the shop do it and the tolls is about £50 so Rolling Eyes

How much would a split link/soft link set cost? what are the betteruns to go for?

I suppose at least i'll be able to propperly clean the chain and put it in engine oil e.t.c.

grrrr (grumble grumble, blimin thing... allways something... grumble)

Thanks for the help all, at least i know what it is now Sad

You should be able to buy soft links loose at a bike shop for a couple of quid if you know what size your chain is. They are used to join chains of the non-endless variety. Try and get the same make as your current chain (they are included in the box with a normal chain)

I fit them using a good big pair of mole grips to push the pins through to flush with the plate then use an M5 nut as a spacer to get the pin that last wee bit through the plate. You just have to tighten the wrench a tiny fraction each time you close them, a wee bit time consuming but effective.

There is a proper tool for doing this but they are quite expensive.

It is getting the old link out without knackering the chain that is the tricky bit. I think my chain splitting tool was £12.
