Wink

I have to MOT my ZX7R this year for the first time, and I may not be able to get it MOT'd where I used to get my others from (they used to turn a blind eye to things like race cans....)

It has been suggested to me that I could remove the 'Not for road use' etching on my race system, and it should pass the MOT.

What would I need to use to get the etching off?

It's an Akropovic carbon can, attached to a full system you see, and I don't want to have to remove the whole system to get it through.

Take it to the place where your getting the MOT done and ask them straight out if they will pass it or not with the race can on?

They can only tell you no and you'll no doubt put it back on again after the MOT. Better than etching the mark off...

After just looking up about MOTs for another thread from this site:
Quote:
Reason for rejection...

3. A silencer fitted to a motorcycle first used on or after 1 January 1985 which is not marked with either:

a. the make and type specified by the motorcycle manufacturer (See info column).

b. British Standard classification BSAU 193 or BSAU 193a or an EEC approval number prefixed by a small 'e' marking or an ECE approval number prefixed by a capital E.

c. A silencer marked 'NOT FOR ROAD USE', TRACK USE ONLY' or similar words.

HTH Thumbs Up

I polished my "not for road use" out....jsut with some autoglym polish. Took about 10 minutes to make a difference and about 45 minutes to do get it all off.

If it's anything like the one below, just polish it out... Thumbs Up

Asked the MOT man if it was alright to bring the bike in with a race can, he asked if it had not for road use on it. And I said I polished it out. "fine" he said Laughing

I've heard some MOT stations will pass it if you can produce a road legal system, not fitted you understand, just turn up with it.

This saves you going to the trouble of fitting it but covers their arse, in that they know you have a road legal system, so they can just claim that it was on the bike when they tested it. ....Then everyone is happy. Laughing

Hi

In Stafford there are only a couple of bike MOT stations.

The one I use is R&B Motors. Suspect that they would not pass a bike with a can marked "not for road use" (as they shouldn't). If it is reasonably quiet then they probably would with the marked removed.

Since about May last year the requirement for the BS stamp / E mark no longer applies for MOTs.

All the best

Keith

My 'not for road use' mark has been polished out. Passed the MOT no trouble Very Happy (although it will be down to the view of the tester whether the noise is excessive or not)

And on that front, I just asked when I booked the MOT.

"My can's really loud. Is that cool or shall I put the original back on?"

There are enough MOT places out there that you can always find a deaf one. Thumbs Up

I was going to polish out the 'not for road use' that is printed on the band of my Akrapovic titanium race can. After I made a few enquires about it, it was pointed out to me that if the band is made of the same stuff there is a good chance that it will discolour when you polish it hard, because titanium unlike stainless doesn't like being polished.

This leaves you with three other options:

1, Drill the band off, turn it inside out and then re-revit it back on.

2, Buy a new band from Performance Parts (UK Akra Importer), and rivet that on. You can't buy 'e' marked Akra bands only the plain ones. Don't buy a universal 'e' marked band cos it will be made of stainless and not match at all.

3, Leave it be and do nothing.

I chose option 3 in the end but I don't have an MOT looming yet. Do you have your original can you could just slip on for the test? Other than this try asking politely at your local MOT station how they stand on race cans and passing bikes with them on. If they say no way, try somewhere else.

You know someone with a can on a busa? Has his sub frame fallen off?
I think attaching a fake BS plate is known as perverting the course of juctice, and can result in a prison sentance.

I've seen storys of Busa's cracking sub frames when people change the can, cus the OE end can is load bearing so removing it puts excessive stress on the subframe.

I might just be a too little cynical for my own good, but I can't really see why you'd make the exhaust cans a stressed member. They'd have to be really quite stiff to resist the bending moment, and are consumables over the bikes lifetime.

Having them on hangers would make more sense to me.
