Now, I have a bike for sale in the E&M section (Honda CBR600F)and recently received this. Can anyone add any light or previous experience to what i think is a scam? I'm not sure how it works but pretty sure it is one. Here goes:

"Hello friend,
i really appreciate your effort in trying to make me know the Bike
present condition,i would love to have a test drive, but my shippers will do
just that, well i am ready to buy the bike at the price £5,000 that is been given. But the the only way i can remitte funds to you is through cashier check. My client will send
to you a cashier checks of £8,000 .receive it,cash it and deduct your money. and send the remaining to my shipping agent that will come for the pick up. the address of the shipping agent will be given to you when you receive the check. email me if you agree with my method of transaction.
Also send your..............................
Full Name,........................
Full Contact Address ..............................
Country........................
Phonenumber............................
in which i would forward to my client to issue out the cashier
check on my behalf.
God bless"

Anyone else seen this before. I told him where he could stick his £8k cheque (clue - You'd need a torch to read it Wink )

cheers , foxbat

That is THE classic scam, if you take his cheque, it clears, you forward the balance where he tells you, and your bike goes, then miraculously the cheque bounces after a few more days.

.....DON'T HAVE ANYTHING TO DO WITH THEM Thumbs Down

I think I read something in MCN about this a month ago, or it was something quite similar. Very dodgy indeed. I think they do something where it get shipped off somewhere and you end up with a cashier check which is not worth the money its printed on.

yeah iv seen something like that before, it was more complicated than what you got though (if not it was just longer) its a scam and a rather crappy one at that, makes you wonder if there really are people out there dumb enough to fall for it... but then again they target people that are selling bikes and stuff...

Beat me to it. I read on a web site about a guy who had a bit of fun when the guy sent him an E-mail like this one. Basically you can write back, tell him there is a fist sized hole in the cylinder, petrol tank, oil sump, no brakes etc & is this ok? He will write back, say it is fine, and probably offer even more than previously.

Stay well clear.

https://www.hoax-slayer.com/overpayment-scam.html

Basically the cheque will bounce even if appears cleared by your bank. The way people are caught is that you end up with 8k credit and then transfer the remaining money (say 6k) back to person.

You then find out weeks later that the orginating bank bouce the cheque meaning they take the 8k back out, leaving you out of pocket to 6k (or even 8 if you've spent the other 2k).

This was even on Watchdog on BBC1 this evening, but people have been operating this for years.

Yep! That's sounds like a scam by a con artist to take your bike without paying for it.

The good ones that you used to be sent out by e-mail to people around the world in trying make them believe that their relative works for the government in some African country and has a vast amount of money that needs to be safe guarded from a revolution that has started. The trick is they ask for your bank details to supposedly to transfer these vast funds to you and you take a percentage for safe guarding it, but in reality it's so that they can clean your bank account out instead!
