Bobbins or bars?

I've removed the side fairings from my FZR simply for cosmetic reasons. Problem is the engine casings are so much more exposed and prone to damage as the result of a crash.

I thought about adding crash bobbins, R&G ones are about £60. The other option is the bars. Does anyone have any experience of bars? Pros and cons? Cost difference?

IMO the bars will be batter in a crash, larger area protecting the bike (you'd be bloody lucky if a bobin would protect the bike were it to fall against the kurb)
Never liked the way a mushroom will transfer all the force to such a small area, its just asking for damamge, bars bend and the load is shared between the mounting points after allot has been taken up by the bending of the bars...

Then again.. on the wrong bike/sports bike, bars look utter pants. nekid bikes they look fine and enduro bikes they are almost mandatory.

I've ordered a set of Renntec Engine bars for my GPZ500S, and I will report my findings when I fit them. Hopefully I should have them at the end of this week before I do Donington on Saturday.

Do R&G actually do crash mushrooms for your bike?

Yeah, had a look on their site this morning, £54 I think they were.

If you look at training school bikes they have the bars. As these bikes are prone to being dropped more i would say. So bars would be better, they just look awful (in my opinion). Choice is yours at the end of the day. Looks over cost is the way i'd look at it

Thought yours was an early FZR. I asked them at the Ally Pally show and they said they only did them for the FZR600R (different frame and slightly different engine), and that is all they list on their web site. If they did them I would have bought some.

Suspect the only real choice currently is to get some heavy duty engine covers (£200 from Demon Tweeks).

The fairing will provide no protection at all for the engine!

Suspect the crash bars might well be better at the low speeds that training school bikes are likely to be dropped at, possibly stopping people getting caught under the bikes, but at higher speed I would suspect you might have a problem occasionally with a foot getting caught in them when you crash.

Hmmm,

Thats put a few different angles on things.
Keith you are a royal pain mate, every time I decide on something you come along and give me loads more info so I have to start all over again!

Dont really wanna spent that kind money (£200) on the bike. Only paid £600 for it and wont keep it, certainly as my main bike for too long.

Maybe ill just strap a couple of cushions to the side!

There are some crash bungs available that bolt to one of the fairing mounts, but I am afraid I do not trust those.

Only real solution is not to drop it.

A mate of my dads had an ankle broken by a crash bar in an accident.

If it suits the look of the bike go with bars IMO. Crash bungs do actually look good IMO on sports bikes, but I'm not entirely sure I trust them not to knacker the frame.

The bars in the picture above are for stunters I suspect.
While the 'traditional' style bars may not be so good for the heavy impacts in a stunting crash.
