Hey i just got this bike, a CBR 600 F3 1998. It needed some work done to it cause it was in a crash before, nothin to big a radiator, valve cap and stator cover. Once everything was installed and filled up, i started it and in about 30 sec it just started to leak oil like crazy out of these factory holes right below where the exhaust mounts to the engine. There 4 holes one for each valve, about a 1/8 inch in dim. What are these holes for and why is it pouring oil out like that when started?

Hi

Mmm, not sure from the descrition. Any chance of a picture?

My guess would be that they are holes for an exhaust gas recirculation feature. This is where the EGR system is plumbed in on the late 1200 Bandit (and there is provision for it on the early shape ones in the UK, but not actually fitted). As such maybe some pipes have been removed, or a blanking plate has been disturbed in the accident.

All the best

Keith

I've had a look at a Honda parts fiche and can't see anything that should fit in that area.

Most modern engines have holes to allow water to drain from the spark plug tunnels, though there shouldn't be any oil in there of course.

Hi

Had a look at a manual for the older CBR and can see nothing there.

Unlikely place for drain holes from the spark plug wells (too far down, and it would have to come around the exhaust port to get to it), but that is a possible idea. Probably worth checking the plugs are seated correctly.

If they were part of the oil system then I would expect a hell of a lot of oil to come out of there quite quickly, but you say only a small amount is coming out.

It is a strange place for anything to do with the oil system as there is nothing near there that needs an oil supply. Some kind of EGR system is still my best guess.

All the best

Keith
