I was riding along as you do trying to get to the post office to send a legal letter to a dealership *cough*.
I riding up a residental street with some cars parked on either side of the road. Started to see cars coming from the over side of the road (see pic). I started to brake because there was a van parked on my side of the road and I was going slightly above the speed limit. When I braked, I braked on a drain cover and I lost the front end and it went towards the left. I hit the ground in an instant and people around were surpised I did not break my shoulder. I started to roll or drag towards the van that was parked on my side of the road.
The bike started to go towards the pavement and around the van and of course I started to head towards the van. I remember saying to myself "If I hit anything, I am going to die". I think it was one of those 'Just before you die' moments. I did not think at all, I was just staring at a tire coming closer. I eventually rolled to the front bumper of the van and the bike went around it. I got up as soon as I could which was a millisecond I was told.
I just looked at my bike and said "f*ck". I saw this man running towards me, obviously trying to help me. He kept asking me to sit down but I didn't. After about 10 seconds or so I started to compliment my marks left in the road for about 10 metres from the drain cover and how lucky I was to not hit the van and the bike not to hit it either. There was a woman there that said she would keep my bike in her drive for now and then all 3 of them started to pick my bike up Laughing
I was about 20-30 metres away from the doctor's surgery so the two people that helped me started to walk me to the doctors while I was still complimenting my marks left in the road. When I got to the doctors walking past my bike instructors house Smile I was told to sit down and wait while I was given a class of water. I waited a whole 5 minutes to be seen; don't know what people are saying about these waiting times Wink .
The guy that helped me let me use his phone to call my dad while in the office. When the doctor came, I complained of leg pains and I was asked to take my trousers off Shocked and I did so when left for 5 minutes. The doctor said no broken bones, just abit of skin missing Smile but I was not to be left alone for 24 hours. I got bandaged up by the nurse and was taken home.
I picked my bike up a day later and toke it home which was a 3 minute ride. My dad has considering making me give up bikes which will not happen Razz . I now have to save up for new gear and a new front end. Unfortunately I can not work at this time and my funds are getting low.
I would take a picture of my buggered leg but I can't be arsed to take of my clothes to do so and it will hurt. I have learned from this and will still be biking.

Shit mate,
sorry to hear about you off but very glad to hear that you are o.k, its amazing how quickly you can end up on your arse admiring the grooves you have left in the road.
you say you braked on a drain cover, did you brake just as you where on it or did you pass over it whilst braking? also how fast where you going?
the bike looks a bit of a state but should be a fairly cheap repair only leaving cosmetic scrapes, sorry i did give a little chuckle at the state of the mirrors after we tightened them up and all!
hope that the damage and yourself gets repaired well and hope to see you on the road soon
Take it easy

From what I can see on your pictures, the forks should straighten, doesn't look like they are creased, just a little bent. A decent bike shop should be able to put you in touch with someone who can roll them for you.

I would be a little more concerned about the big hole in the clutch cover. That'll either need replacing or a new bit welding on and you will need to give it all a good clean out in case any metal filings or bits of road have landed up in there.

Glad you are ok.

I got a spare clutch cover from my previous engine that conked out. The hole is always there, it is just a Suzuki logo plate that is glued on to the side. Not sure about filings though.

Thanks for the all "Glad your okay". I don't want to die yet since I am 17 and about the same age as Lee who died (off topic) and I am pretty lucky.

Bah, sorry to hear about your spill.

Bloody drain covers, I've almost been had by them a few times now. It seems that road workers/councils (or whoever decides to put them where they are) are trying to kill bikers. Some of the things I see in the middle of the lanes around here are ridiculous. I'm constantly dodging crap all over the place.

Drain covers (apart from old women drivers) are the most annoying thing on the road. Where I live (Kirkwall, Orkney) they are scattered about everywhere, and there is a mini roundabout I use which has no less then 8 drain covers on them. I've had tyres slip a couple of times on covers, but haven't come off on one.... Yet. I reckon it would cost less to tarmac all the drain covers then it costs the NHS to fix all the bikers who have had spills cos of slipping on covers.

R4nger, get well soon ok! Good luck with bike

You can only learn from it can't you.

50mph on a residential street though matey, it is kind of asking for trouble. I should know as 30mph was too fast for the driver that took me off my bike, and that was a write-off!

Still, glad to hear its hurt your wallet rather than you...broken bits of you can't be removed and replaced as easy as bits of bike. Wink
