People learn at different rates. Those who are doing 20 may feel that they are uncomfortable doing 30 - despite being in a 30 zone. There's nothing to say that there's a minimum speed limit in zones where learner drivers roam, and they choose a 30 limit specifically beacause it's often the clearest bit of road available without any street furniture obstructing them like speed humps. Learning is progressive. If you're not comfortable handling 20mph, there's not a chance in hell that you'd be able to compotently manage a car about at 30mph.

My instructor was very cautious that even though i'm a confident driver according to her, she did warn me that i had a habit of going 5mph over the limit in most areas. I never used to get the generalised look of a learner driver, but then again i feel i had an advantage of being on the road for longer due to riding my ped back then. Whoever said that women can't drive maybe somewhat correct in certain aspects, but they can sure as hell teach a young lad to drive safely and compotently.

Off topic: on an old Top Gear episode, someone suggested a minimum speed limit on NSL's whereupon those who fail to reach the limits will be picked off the police marksmen (instead of being speed-gunned). I reckon this should apply to learners who have been unfortunately led onto >40mph zones by their instructors and they are presented with a clear, dry road ahead. Just a thought.

You notice it more as they are learner drivers but in truth i think most people these days drive consistently well under the speed limit, struggle with clutch control to pull away quickly and do not overtake, ever.

I was giving a lift to a spanish workmate a year or back and he seemed to think it was down to a culture of fear/brainwashing due to police and road safety campaigns.

He may have a point but in truth i think its just modern life...people seem to think they are entitled to do what they like and have no common sense or consideration whatsoever, and generally are in a world of their own.

It will only get worse as well.

'Overtake them then' I hear the reply. Well that's exactly what I would do, except I'm very rarely right behind them. There's always one or two cars between me and the novice. It's not really possible to overtake on a 125 in a controlled way unless the road is straight and clear.

So a 125 can't manage to pass a train of cars doing 20 mph....

Fuck me, you could do that on a push bike....

Never mind ranting about "L" drivers... We have all been there at some point....

You need to take a long hard look at YOUR riding. If you can't pass a car doing 20mph Rolling Eyes Twisted Evil

Agree, but I'm hoping that in the nearly 14 years since he posted, he's found where the throttle is.

Or maybe 125's were slower in them days? Shocked

What's worse is when you see a driving school car being driven badly, assume its a learner in control then see that its actually an instructor on their own. There's a few of them round where I live. I always want to advise their pupils when I see one to get a new instructor.

I was looking forward to a good debate as an ex ADI, but sadly not.

driving instructors in ash vale

I read somewhere that a lot of instructors touch folk in Ash Vale.

Can't remember where I'd read that.
