Does the er-5 have a cooling fan linked to the thermostat?

We recently had a problem with Paulodd's er-5, coolant everywhere, I suspected a blown head gasket due to overheating, but apparently something was loose under the tank.

(Why that would stop it starting and cause smoke to come out the side of the cylinder head I don't know)

I think it does have a fan, but how easily does it kick in?

I'm still not much the wiser what went wrong with the er-5, but apparently it all runs ok now. It did have problems with stalling/not behaving at low revs.

GPZ500s engine is similar and I know about them.

There is a seperate fan switch. The fan kicks-in as the temperature needle is just about to hit the red. A lot of people fit a manual override switch the GPZ series kawas so they can switch the fan on sooner. As I recall, the fan switch is halfway down the left side of the radiator, the temperature sensor is mounted in the assembly that contains the thermostat and the filler cap.

There is a smalll hole in either side of the cylinder head hidden between the fake cooling vanes. If you get a leak round the coolant pipes that go down through the rocker cover, the fluid runs down into the recess that the sparkplugs sit in. The small holes run from the bottom of this recess to the outside of the cylinder head. Small amounts of coolant getting in here could be vapourised and blown out of the holes as steam.

The sloution to this is to replace the o-rings on the coolant pipes. If the rocker cover has been removed at any point (eg to set the tappets) and the o-rings were not renewed, a leak is highly likley.
