I'm thinking of putting a Africa Twin lump in my bros400 and change various things, front end and things like that.

Question is, is there any point if I can't get insured with reasonable cost?

Has anyone done similar and know about the insurance issues?

You would need to get specialist insurance. A company called Footman James specialise in this. It can sometimes work out cheaper, other times it is hugely expensive

If you change too many bits, you will have to put the bike through an SVA test (I think changing to engine AND the whole front end might trigger this).

Also, whilst I am all for people making wacky bikes:

Africa twin. One of the biggest bikes on the market.
Bros 400. Teeny weeny motorcycle.

Visions of cracking open the throttle and waking up to find the swingarm has curled itself under the bike and both wheels are touching each other.

Couldn't stop laughing at that.

Apparently it will work ok, can see my self selling it in 20 years half finished.

https://www.d-murray.co.uk/severe.htm He did it but I get the feeling he REALLY knows what he's doing rather than doing it to see what the insides of a bike look like.

The article there sounds like he was doing it to a standard UK model Bros which is a 650. I have heard of people taking them out to 810cc.

A 400 Bros is an import and quite a lot smaller than the 650 if memory serves.

Thumbs Up The Bros 400 always looked pretty much the same size as the CBR and RVF 400 to me. Not very big.

The 400 and 650 are exactlly the same size bikes but 650 has a bigger bore.

The main idea is that it's almost an NSR250 chassis so is a nimble bike. I imagine it will become less so with a fat xrv750 in it.

But if I wanted a really fast bike that was amazing on the track I'd buy a R1 or something like that.

Love the idea of having a old commuter bike that is wolf in sheeps clothing.

Stinky,

Kev Raymond (formerly of BiKE magazine fame) has a Honda BRos 400 frame with a tuned africa twin engine in it. The 800cc pacific coast engine shares the same dimentions with the Africa Twin, Bros 400 and 650 lumps.

Kev's bike has an RGV250 front end and bodywork with an NC30 wheel and swingarm, with an NC30 shock.

A few years back he reckoned there was nothing that could beat him through the mountain at cadwell!

I'll have to dig the article out again.

In the end it'll have something like this:

CBRF2 front end.
CBR900 rear shock
VFR Rear wheel
Africa Twin engine
Hammerite BBQ black on EVERYTHING! Cool

If cost is a concern, then I wouldn't bother as you can probably get better bikes for the extra that you will spend on everything.

But then you wouldn't really choose to do this sort of thing on a cost basis Smile.
