Just recently I've gotten into the bad habit of riding off with my side stand down. Any suggestions of things I can do to remind me to put it up before I ride away. I thought of putting something near the ignition button, so before I start it I will see the thing to remind me.

Any other ideas?

The ultimate way to remember will be falling off because of leaving it down, but I'd prefer a less painful way of remembering.

You could use on of those disc lock twirly things and attach it to the handle/stand.

You'd do that a few times and get so sick of doing that you'll remember

Does you bike not have a kill switch?

Using a sticker on the is another idea.

You could just make sure you do it, it will become second nature after a while.

Luckily my scooter side stand is like a Crosser stand and retracts as soon as its lifted off the stand.
I thaught all bikes which come with side stands stalled as soon as the bike was put into gear while the stand was down.

Anyway, You could get a bit of fuel hose about 2 cm long, and tipex "Side stand" on it. and push it over your igniton key. so that way, you cannot start the bike without taking the fuel hose off. when you take it off, put it in your disklock key.

Got the idea from "Stinkwheel"

It is true that most reasonably modern bikes have a cutout switch that prevents you riding off with the stand down.

It is also true that the first thing a great many people (such as me) do when they buy a bike is to disconnect this switch due to its tendancy to cause the bike to cut out at some random point in the future (invariably when both dark and raining).

It will become second nature after a while. The theory of it digging in and flipping you off is dubious in my books, having ridden off with the side stand still down several tens of times. As you are probably aware, you tend to get ten to twenty yards along the road before you hear a clunk! as the sidestand bounces off the road onto its stop.

Generally second nature once you get it into your ride off routine, but not needing to makes that more difficult.

Choke off, indicators and hazard lights off, sidelights and dipped healights on, sidestand up, correct gear and go. T'is more or less how I set off.

Buy a GSX-R. They shut off when put into gear with the side stand down. Simple fix.

I thought it was common nature for the bike to be killed as soon as you try and put the bike into gear with the side stand down? Obviously not. Smile

Hi(just for Sinky)

Legally bikes in Europe must have a device to stop you riding off with the stand down. That lands up being an ignition cut out when the stand is down (which loads of people disconnect), or a self retracting side stand (which even more people modify as bodywork is expensive), or sometimes just a warnign light or even just a rubber tag on the end of the stand to flip it up safely.

All the best

Keith

Not dubious at all. Have seen a very nasty accident where somebody forgot their sidestand. Accelerated up the road went to turn left and that was it - as soon as he tried to crank it over he came flying off. Not nice.

Snap it off and fix up a centre stand instead

Aye, knew somebody in the Henley/Reading area that lost his left foot due to a badly installed sidestand spring. He pulled away, sidestand flopped back down then dug in on the first corner and caught badly, sheared and went through his ankle. Sick

I don't because I disconnected the cutout switch as soon as I got the bike Wink I have had too many intermittant electrical faults in the pishing rain caused by the damned things.

The self-retracting ones are a particularly dumb idea too. A gust of wind hits your Ducati 916 with enough force to lift a little of the weight off the stand and 'Flick, crunch'...two grands worth of plastics down the toilet.

You can't ride off on my supermoto with the side stand down anyway. If you sat on it with the stand down, the whole bike would be leaning over about 20 degrees away from the stand and you would topple over.

Wire the sidestand up to an electric buzzer, put the buzzer in your seat then every time you try to ride off with your stand down it will give you an electric shock in the butt Very Happy Laughing

Or more sensibly, get a clear sticker made up with "sidestand" in small black writing then stick it on inside of your visor, so everytime you put your visor down you see the words "sidestand" or similar..

Or get a proper supermoto and don't even bother having a sidestand at all Wink I'm pretty sure I can't ride off with the wall still attatched Laughing so I'm pretty safe Laughing Wink

assuming the kickstands on the left, always park up next to something to the right of the bike, park with a wall close to the right of the bike for example (not too close or you won't be able to sit on it and walk it backwards), also try and park with something in front of you.

that way you have to push it backwards and you have to turn the bike left and if the kickstands down your most likely going to feel it scrape on the floor whilst turning. If it doesn't scrape on the floor your probably going to catch your leg on it.

lol in theory Laughing mgiht work, might not?
