Was cleaning my spark plug today ready for resale, replaced the plug, bike starts up fine, fires better than before. I then look around the area and I notice that my exhaust pipe is severly rusted! Thing is I don't know if it is normal or not so I ask for your expertise and knowledge...

Its normal. Worst part for getting rusted due to most exposure to road surface/salt.

Looks like surface rust... go to Halfords, get some wire wool and some black exhaust paint.. take the exhaust off, rub it down with the wire wool until it's nice and smooth again then spray the exhaust with the paint..

Yes perfectly normal.

As Yams says you could clean it with a wire brush then paint it, but if the person buying your bike knows anything about motobikes then it wouldn't affect the sale at all.

The pipe is rusted for good and you won't be able to do much to it. The frame could be cleaned up, but i might end up looking worse as to do it properly you will need plenty of time and effort.

As Cagiva Geezer says, that pipe is beyond help really, its a mtter of time before it goes through.
As for the frame, use some rust kill treatment then brush on some smooth matt finish hammerite, i've just done both stands on my BIRD and its come up lovely.

It'll be cracking and blowing soon enough, especially if you get a rear puncture and have to abuse it to get the rear wheel off.

Well it looks like standard surface rust to me, found on any exhaust on any bike.

Bought my ped brand new in December... the pipe looks like that, if not worse, already.. My brand new Leovince is already starting to go!

From what I gather its purely a cosmetic thing, but I wouldn't say for sure. I have actually looked at other peoples 'zorsts, and they've gone the same way, so I'm not too worried!

I must just say it's not purely cosmetic. Scooter pipes seem almost without fail to be made from mild steel which rusts very well. They are hidden for the most part, so this rust damage isn't seen, and not cleaned. It may appear to be superficial, but it will eat through the pipe eventually, particularly if the pipe is subject to extra stresses.

ah right, so it is a bit of a problem then... any idea how to stop it before it totally corrodes the pipe? REALLY don't want my exhaust to break off whilst I'm going along Shocked

I don't really care if it decides to go bang after I have collected £250 and got rid of the bike though. Very Happy

Dont worry about that rust. Just cover it in WD40 and leave it. It will be fine for another year or so.

stop worrying about a rusty exhaust its NOT a problem. it isnt going to snap if it geos throught it will just be blowing a bit and youll notice it getting worse.
and WD40 deosnt work because the exhaust gets too hot and just burns it off in no time. the only exhausts that dont rust are stainless steal pipes and they cost stupid money.

Most standard OEM two-stroke exhausts are double skined. performace exhausts like nikon and arrow have only one skin of very thin steel due to the way they are made and weight saving issuse.

Wire wool and emery cloth Jon - that's the answer. Your potential buyer will inevitably know that the downpipes rust like shit esp on scoots - i had the standard expansion chamber exhaust which had surface rust on the d/pipes, but expansion chamber was fine. Elbow grease will get it off. I'd recommend the use of hammerite paint or any exhaust paint, but that'll cost you more.

A little WD 40 on every inch of the bike will help it sell. As long as you make it look good, what he don't ask, he don't know and therefore you don't have to tell him nout.

Exhausts DO SNAP OFF and not just blow!!!!

I have 2 in the workshop that have just SNAPPED OFF, yes the rust is worrying if it penetrates too far as the cost of replacement will eat into proffit.
If the pipe snaps and goes under the back wheel then it could result in an OFF. The rust on the pic is deep scaled rust causing the pipe to have lumps on the surface, this is constant with regular use, poor cleaning and usual thin mass produced mild steel exhausts designed to keep cost down.........and yes......all pipes made of mild steel suffer it.
