Well, in the next couple of months, i'm going to be looking to do my test. Now i've been looking at what bikes i can have, but at 33Bhp, is it worth it? I went to a nice Triumph / Yamaha dealer in Flitwick to chat about what possibilities i have.
I dont't want something that's going to feel amazingly bogged down, but bt law, i'd even have to restrict an er-500 :S. Personally i'd like something that looks slightly sporty, but i do have a soft spot for the sv650. I'm going to have about 2000-2500 to spend on the bike, and a budget of around 700 for insurance. I fear i may make a bad decision.

33bhp is quite powerfull if you've never ridden before/been stuck on a 125.

You can pick up an SV650 for that money easily, don't expect to afford insurance for that money though!

Your options are:

Get a bike either a) bigger and restrict it, and sit out your restriction period or b) get a bike that doesn't need restricting (bros 400)

Get a bike, and don't restrict it, or take the restrictors out after a while to get used to it.

The chances of getting caught are minimal, but obviously it is against the law.

Well, firstly, i would be looking at TPF&T insurance, you sure it would cost more, being that it would be in a garage in my garden.
Also does anyone have experience with a restricted SV?
I wouldn't mind having it de-restricted, but if i was in an accident, theres a chance of getting caught, right?

If you plan on staying restricted, go for a 33bhp or close to 33bhp bike. They might feel a little underpowered, but a 70 or 100bhp bike restricted down to 33bhp will feel really underpowered.

If you don't plan on being restricted, be a little sensible over what you get. The 50bhp from a 500 twin would be quite exciting enough for a year or two, and few people at this stage of bike ownership keep their bike for over a year.

SV650 would probably be quite a hop. I've had my full licence for over 2 years now and I'm just about to get an SV. That said, I would expect the SV to take the restriction better than an inline four 400, because it has a lot more power low down.

be careful with your choice of bike, my mate got a fzr400, it didnt handle well with the restrictors and caused loads of trouble with his fuel consumption and ex-up.

Even 400's need restricting if your going to be completely legal. Personally i wouldnt go any bigger than a 500, you have all the time in the world to progress to a bigger machine
