Swingarm bearings loose

How easy (or hard) is it to change the swingarm bearings? The problem I have really is there is no obvious way to secure the bike when it comes to dropping the swingarm off with no centre stand. Would it be a costly job, or if I get it done with the MOT might it be cheaper/easier? I'm not sure whether to tackle it myself or not.

Hi

Depends on the bike, but sometimes not that easy (it is a long way from the other side of the arm to the bearing to drift them out).

Is it really the swinging arm bearings or one in the linkage? The linkage is generally not that bad, just time consuming. Easier if they are plastic bushes.

On Cols ZX6R on Saturday we use a car engine hoist with a strap under the subframe (through the pillion footrest hangers) to support the back end.

Depends how stuck in they are. You don't say which bike or how old. Holding the bike up is less of a problem than holding it steady whilst you whack the bearings. Garages will usually have a press / hydraulic puller / air tools which make the job quicker.

If they are loose because they are worn, expect the shaft to need replacing too (depends on model of bike). If, more likely, they are loose because they have collapsed - the shaft may be OK, but the races could be a bastard to get out.

Tell us more? What bike - its history etc.

It's a '00 NSR125R ~10500 miles. I think I'll leave it until the MOT next month and get them to do it if need be. Cheers Thumbs Up
