Oil warning light

Hi all,
Wonder if any one can help me out with a little problem, hopefully its a simple answer! Anyway on my ride to work this morning i started the bike up with the choke, let it warm up for all of 10 seconds and set off, i live in the town so keep it below 4K to let it warm up. have the engine running for a couple of minutes and while stopped at a set of traffic lights whilst stationary i noticed that the oil light had come on. bollox!
so i pulled to the side of the road and turned the engine off, waited 30 sec and turned it on again, no light so i continued, after another minute the light came on again so i turned round to go home, on my way back the light went out so i continued my ride to work. got to work with no light coming up again, just been and checked the oil and it seems that it is half way between the two min max indicators,
so what could have caused the oil light to come on? the cold? the fact the bike had stood for 2 days in the damp fog?

Hi

The oil light on the Divvy is an oil level light rather than an oil pressure light (loads of Yamahas have oil level lights). As such when it comes on it does not mean that you have just wrecked your engine (unlike oil pressure lights most of the time).

When the oil is cold it will take longer to run down from the top of the engine back to the sump, so it can "appear" to be a lower oil level. Also if you are sitting on a slight hill then the oil will be at a different end of the engine (think the sensor is at one end of the engine).

Also possible that the sensor is just past it.

Probably worth topping the oil up to the max mark but not worrying about it too much.

Thanks for that keith, has put my mind at ease, i started her after work to ride home no light but as i went up a long hill the light came on and stayed on so stopped once i was clear of the hill, as it was on a slight decline the light went off. after that no problems. think that is must be the cold, will have a real good look at the oil level and make sure its upto the max level,
Another question, the oil was changed when it had its clutch replaced and not too sure whats in it, what is the stance with mixing oils? as i have some 10W40 that i can top it up with?

I would avoid mixing oils if I can, but not obsessively. Chances are that 99.9% of the time you will be fine.
