Hi

Not sure whether this really is endorsed by Transport 2000BC but someone is claiming that they encouraging people to write to the BBC trying to get Top Gear shelved "on the grounds that they glamorise speed and use of vehicles with high fuel consumption.".

https://www.cyclingplus.co.uk/forum/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=61541

Transport 2000BC are certainly too careful to put anything about it on their web site but it certainly seems plausable.

All the best

Keith

I agree with scrapping it Thumbs Up

Or at least a major revamp, and the focus on more.....hmm...."easily affordable" cars? Thinking

That fifth gear was well better in my opinion. Thumbs Up Although not necessarily THAT much different.

Perhaps its just because I hate that pr*ck Clarkson Laughing

I've filled in the survey, suggesting that they scrap all cookery programmes as they promote obesity, Songs Of Praise as it promotes religious extremism, Animal Hospital as it champions the enslavery of innocent animals and Match Of The Day as it glorifies competition and elitism. I hope that's OK with all my fellow license fee payers?

And maybe get Performance Bikes to do more tests of the CG125, and prevent them doing anything like testing such dangerously fast and fuel inefficient bikes as a CBR125 Laughing .

Can just see how many people would turn on to watch a show about how many mpg a diesel Focus does. If they care about cars like that then the local Ford dealer would give them a test drive, unlike the local Ferrari dealer.

All the best

There is a difference between £7000 for a cbr600rr and £200,000 for a ferrari you know....

Not bothered about the fuel economy etc, thats a load of crud. Just if I wanted to buy a car, on my budget, I'd be inclined to look away from top gear. I don't earn £50,000 a year.

I want to see mental people do mental things with motorised vehicles. I don't care if they cost £50 or £500,000.

It just happens that ferraris and lamborghinis and Koenigsegg cars happen to be fairly easy on the eye, and make lots of tyre smoke.

TV doesn't have to be about fact. It can be about escapism.

Bring on the escapism - and I watch Hollywood Movies but it doesn't mean that I like to blow up people and then say witty one liners...

The explosions hardly get a look in in my life these days! Smile

Hi

There are numerous magazines looking at boring cars, but I expect the viewing figures for a program based on them would be tiny.

Sure I do not earn £50k a year but there are loads of cars on there that, if I really wanted to, I could afford, and even those that I have no chance of affording I would still like to hear about.

After all, would you turn off a TV program on the Marine Technologies Y2K (the gas turbine bike) just because you could not afford it?

All the best

Keith

I'm not particularly interested in cars but you have to take Top Gear for what it is, possibly the best thing on TV on a Sunday night (excluding Songs od praise of course). Would it be as interesting if the supercars weren't there? I don't think so. It's a bit of escapism, I want to see what the opposition is and what I'll put in my garage next to my selection of bikes after the lottery win. Wink

Hmm, fair doo's. I used to watch it because of the supercars etc but then I jsut got bored and when it came to the point that I wanted a normal car, I found out I didnt have £200k in my bank account. Bugger.

Top gear magazine however....was top notch stuff. Haven't bought that in a while. Guess its just what you want from the program...Smile

i like top gear, where else can you see ferrari's and lambo's for free (cept license fee's, etc.)

i enjoy it. and would never ask for it to be taken away.

anyone that tries to get rid of a tv programme, either
1) can't find the TV Remote and has to sit through the program.
2) cannot function the remote control!

Not many people do, but then very few Ferraris cost £200k. Cheapest 2nd hand Ferrari on autotrader this is a Mondial at £9750.

OK a new 360 is something like £130k, but you would be surprised how many people could scrape that together if they really wanted it, and with silly house prices could free up the equity to do so.

All the best

Someone my dad works with decided she wanted a 360 last year, got the money together and got one. She earns around the same as dad, which isnt a huge amount, she just doesnt have the kids to spend it all for her!

I have also read about a nurse that dreamed of owning a TVR, she saved for years untill she had enough and picked up a nice new purple touscan. If you set your mind to a car most are atainable if you can save.

Keep top gear. Lots of top cars being thrashed to death. Pure entertainment. I'll never own vehicles like this, so I need to see 'em on the box. Very Happy

top gear hasnt always bin about fast cars tbh it started off as a review of every day cars for sale with the odd high end car thrown in for fun, the programme has evolved into what it is today and i think it has done a good job of showing the cars it does show, fifth gear is now the closest show to the original top gear even down to using some of the old presenters of top gear(plus the loverly vicky).
Thumbs Up

I don't want to watch a programme if they're reviewing £9000 Fiestas because they're of no interest to me. Period.

Now, whilst I can't afford a £140k Lamborghini I will still be interested in a test because I like the engineering, I like the exotic, I like the performance and I'm interested in what £140k can get you.

If I was in the market for a car, yes. Thumbs Up I guess it jsut about where your interest lies in cars. I'd rather have a volvo 850r estate than a murcielago (or whatever a certain ferrari is called)

I'm just weird though Wink
