I'm not sure if this is a problem or feature....
My ZXR 400 will only start (turn the engine over) when the handle bars are straight (front wheel straight).

I looked at the wiring diagram and cant see a so called "handle bar straight switch" thats cuts the starter motor out?!?!?!

Can anyone tell me if this is supposed to happen?

Cheers

Wireing is faulty somewhere, can't say where though, when your bars are turned they are brakeing the connection... does it do it in both directions? I'm assumeing it dosen't cut out when you turn them after its started?

Probably not the kill switch, maybe the sidestand switch? or clutch diode (if its got one) or any number of new fangled wonders.. Posting the electrical diagram would be usefull...

edit - Duh... quite probably the starter button, check the wireing leading from it for any breaks or corrosion.

Sounds like a broken wire or a connector thats come loose.

Sounds like the starter motor wire. Does the engine stay running when you turn the bars left and right ?

If it does, then I would check the starter wire out.

Yeah it does it both ways, I checked the swith all the way back to the junction box and its fine, its weird. I even wiggled the wires without moving handle bar and it didnt seem like a break in the wire which confirms my circuit test. <- I'll do this again to check

Unfortunately the starter circuit is really over complicated and i couldn't work out what polarity I was checking for a few of the connections in the junction box. Looks like i'm going to have to check it all again as seems like its almost cirtainly a wiring error.

One plus, Its not the stand switch as i checked that.

Here is where i got the diagram, unfortunatly the L general one points to the H model one but the rest are fine....

Ok Thanks for that, i managed to fix it, it was a broken wire on the left handle bar for the clutch.

Its so you can start with the clutch in, it feeds to the junction box in line with the neutral switch.

The wire was disconnecting is such a way that it only connected when the handle bars were straight. I need to solder it on now to fix it.

Cheers for the quick replies, it saved me thinking it was a feature and braking down somewhere.....

Thanks....
