I was wondering if anyone could put an answer to this bike problem, a mate of mine is very keen on buying it but really worried about the description, he basically wants a bike that he can get on and have a good summer on. Hes got a loan to get a zxr400 but doesnt want to end up with something that when he gets it checked out, the mechanic shakes his head and says "new engine needed, mate" whilst rubbing his hands together!

anyone had this problem with there bike?
know if its an expensive job?

or is it really too much of a gamble for him!

cheers if anyone helps Thumbs Up Confused

Its a Kawasaki engine, I'd expect the clutch the rattle a little anyway.

If its not that it's either probably the cam chain or the valves need checking majorly?

Honda CBR and VFR/RVF 400's have gear driven cams, the ZXR400 do run out of cam chain tension at about 18k miles usually, about a £250 fix due to how long it takes, not a hard job just time consuming replacing the chain and sometimes tensioner

a work pal of mine has just told me it could well be your tappits. if they are not tight enough or out of time you will get a slite tapping sound. its not a new engine job but its certainly not a 10 min job either!

The gearboxes seem to be more trouble than anything from what ive heared...

Make sure the engine is a goodun if your ever in any doubt don't bother, just try finding a second hand zxr400 engine in good condition, low millage and not for stupid money.. they are getting tricky to find...

Right cheers for the info people it was much appreciated in the end he travelled up this morning to see it, and he took it for a ride and in the end for the money it went for he said it wasnt worth it bit tacky and there was no power to it it lagged even blipping it to 70mph, also the lad turned round to him and said "if i dont sell it il, brake it an sell as spares"

you gotta ask yourself WHY?? if in the description he'd just spend £2,000 doing it up!

so he's still on the look out for a bargain zxr400 or gsxr400.........

cheers again for the knocking noice help! Thumbs Up
