Hey all,

I finally decided to sell on my RK (once I'd got it working and road worthy Rolling Eyes ) to buy a S/R Y reg.. that needs a lot of work Laughing

Wasn't too bad, got it from one of those recovery auctions for £400, but the picture really didn't do the damage justice Crying or Very sad

It's pretty messy, fairing snapped off, front subframe snapped.. ugh. Thevin little... (*(%!!

New lock set's needed (of course), whole set of fairing (including front subframe and lights), rusty patches all over and filthy? Just a bit! Think I'm gonna need to take a look at the gearbox though, finding neutral took forever and my old RK was easy as....

I have no idea though what the engine's like, if it was thrashed till it died or what. I untangled the four ignition wires (thus the fuse was gone Rolling Eyes ) and have got the ignition on, but it won't start. The starter chugs over ok, but I checked the HT and no spark. Now I'm guessing this is due to my dodgy wiring and I'm sure the kill switch needs to be bypassed somehow.

I got a red, green, black and black with one stripe, but all I know is red + black = ignition on. Anyone know what the other wires are for or how to register the killswitch as "run"?

Why I decided to take on another heap I'll never know, but hey, it's about 10 years younger on the plus side Wink

Thanks guys,

-Joel

If the bike was dropped/crashed on the side with the gear lever it may have done some damage to the selector fork or other parts of the gear box.

No spark? could be a lot of things, check the side stand switch, kill switch and clutch lever switch. There isn't really much to the wiring for the ignition, so shouldn't be too hard to sort out.

Hi

Normally the kill switch earths out the ignition, so normally you just leave it disconnected to bypass it.

All the best

Thanks for the quick replies guys.

I never knew the side stand switch meant it wouldn't turn over!? Mind you, I did try it with the stand up (just in case) but no joy.

Guess the coil could be buggered since they could have shorted it when tying all the wires together?

Guess I'll give that a go in the morning.

If anyone thinks of anything or had theirs s/r with similar probs, it'd be cool if you could post your thoughts.

Thanks again guys,

-Joel

Well I had a proper fiddle today, changed the coil and it sparks now (and hurts Laughing ), the old plug was dead so I replaced that, but it still won't start Evil or Very Mad

I replaced the pertol in there since there is no fuel cap and I suspected water may have got in there (since it was sitting around in the open for months) and changed the oil too, but I'm not replacing the coolant yet since I have a feeling the rad will come off again...

I guess the piston and/or rings and cylinder must be shot, so I might take a look at that tomorrow. I'd hoped never to do another rebuild but there we go. Ah well, more expense... Rolling Eyes

If anyone thinks any diffrent let me know...

Is the plug getting wet with fuel?

I'm just playing with a friends tzr at the moment, this bike had water in the tank that found it's way into the carb.

The float bowl was full of mayo, jets were blocked and rust had formed on the needle, pretty much wrote off half the carb components. Sad

Well guys, she started, and runs much nicer than my old RK!! Happy days!

I've now go the V5 on the way (which is free since she's a class "C" recovery Very Happy ) and I got a new lockset for her! Nice!

However, I got no idea how to change the locks. I assumed they were standard nuts at first (which worried me) but thankfully they are bolts with no heads. But that's the problem. How the heck do I get them out?!

Any ideas folks?

Drill the heads off. Use a slow drill because the bolts are hard steel and if you slip off the centre into the alloy you will make a mess. Once you have the heads off you should be able to remove the lock then get some mole-grips on the stub that is left. Or cut a slot in the stub with a hacksaw and use an impact screwdriver to loosen them off.
