I've got a Yamaha trailway, the pre 2001 model. Does anyone if you can fit tyres with a different tread pattern. My current tread is pretty nobbly. Both times I've been called on to do an emergency stop in the wet on a regular road surface I've stopped but gone into a back wheel skid and the bike's landed on my ankle - v painful.

Any suggestions on how to avoid this outcome would be welcome

Claire

You can fit road tyres if you like. It'd make the ride smoother but E stops in the wet are just sh1t fullstop.

Not trying to to patronise you, but I would suggest that if you can't do an emergency stop in the wet then you need to practise them.

Next time it pisses down just get out on an empty car park and practise them. Start off braking gently then gradually brake harder and harder, get the know when the wheel is about to lock and what to do when it does.

You never know - it might just save you from sliding under the wheel sof the next car to pull out on you. Thumbs Up

Don't confuse emergency stop with panic stop. An emergency stop is controlled, yet very hard braking for when you note a hazard such as a car pulling out of a junction when it shouldn't. A panic stop is when you just grab at the brakes randomly if something jumps out at you at the last millesecond, usually causing a meeting of face and tarmac. The front should be used in moderation in the wet not only will it's locking send you into a low side, but will promote the rear locking up. Try and use a 50-50 sort of split in the wet. As was said, get out and practice these in wet car parks, much safer than on the road.
