My dad was involved in an accident last night, where he and his pillion were taken off by some twat that decided to turn left at the last minute, even though the guy was in the right hand lane indicating right, police were involved, they said his detail were all in order and let him go pending investigation. Anyway what I want to know is, cause of my dad's bikes age, fj1100 g reg I think, would his insurance class it as a write off? According to my dad it's repairable, but wasn't ridable last night.

well if they think that it would cost more to repair than the cost of the bike it will be a write off, but they let you buy your bike back normally

id probably say it would be cheaper for the insurance company to write it off as parts for older bikes are harder and sometimes more expensive to get hold of. They may repair it but chances are they will probably write it off. If they du ya dad can buy it back off them and repair it himself??

They will look at current book price and work out the cost of repairs. I think its around 60% cost of repairs that they decide the bike is economically unviable to repair.

Well he had one before which the engine decided to die on, so he has alot of spare parts, some of them quite new. I now he's pissed off cause he only had it back on the road last week, had to replace clutch for it's MOT. According to my bro, he hit the car in the passenger front door and wing, and that oil was pissing everywhere, this sounds to me like the forks have gone. I haven't seen the bike myself yet, it's in our mates dad's van. I'm gonna take pics of it for the insurance claim, I think my dad & mate are both gonna take this guy to court.

Hi

As Dianese says, about 60% is the point where they will write it off. Given the age of the bike they will almost certainly write it off as a dented tank alone will be a very large proportion of the cost.

Chances are that he will be able to keep the bike remains. Just try and get it recorded as a category D.

It does not surprise me that he was cautioned. He was undertaking and so there is a chance that they would want to prosecute him and the caution just means that they can question him while keeping their options open.

All the best

Keith

Even if it was at a set of traffic lights on a decent sized road?
