Ok, I'm getting ahead of myself but I've got a chance of a new job in Glasgow. Bit further away from where I work just now but shit loads more cash but no car...

I was thinking (if I get it) should I commute by car or bike and if it's a bike, what should I be looking at? I won't be using the Ninja thats for sure so I'm looking at Bandit 600's, ER5's, CB500's, CBF600's etc....

Say a budget off about 2k tops. Something reliable and maybe a bit fun too that will do a 70 miles round trip everyday and be cheap to run and insure....

Any suggestions?

ER-5. as cheap as a 125 to run and insure practically.

If you get a good one you will have no bother with it.

Parts are cheap and plentyfull and easy to get hold of.

Also there is the GPZ500s all the positives of the ER-5 except you have some more bonus things like wind protection and a lovely powerband at 7000RPM

(and my mate happens to be selling an immaculate and lovely blue GPZ500)

Need a commuter bike to keep your other one clean and tidy.
Suggest something like a GT550 (stop laughing at the back).

Cheap as anything (way less than £1K), easy to work on, cheap insurance, engine goes on forever, shaft drive so little in maintenance/chain wear.
Get one with an aftermarket fairing will help the commute.

Only thing lacking would be some excitement, but you've a bike at home for that Thumbs Up

Blade would be my fun bike when I get round to buying one. Never had to commute on a bike before but it would be cheaper than using a car.

That Diversion looks ok, any idea what they are like?

Couldn't even tell you what a GT550 is but doesn't sound too appealing !

Something with a big f*ck off fairing. Bandit 600 with full fairing? (sorry, I'm telling everyone what I want now Wink) Hows about........honda deauville (yes.....a honda).....

Something with an aftermarket fairing is a good idea. As you'll want some decent wind protection.

70 miles is the same distance as my commute will be this summer, but I can't be bothered doing that one the bike EVERY day so am resorting to bus. Maybe once or twice a week though Thumbs Up I think the er5 is too vibey at motorway speeds, even though they are stupidly cheap.

Yamaha diversion, can't see a problem with one of them either. Full fairing jobbie though Thumbs Up

Think you need to consider how long you'll be at this new job and how a bike would take the punishment.

70 miles, 5 days a week = 350miles
Do that for say 40 weeks and it's 14000 miles.

Normal annual mileage for a bike is quoted at 6 to 8K miles (cars are around 10-12K).
So with that anything with iffy build quality is likely to be shagged after that (costing more to keep going).
That mileage also suggests a service (oil + filter) about every 8 to 9 weeks. Suggest changing plugs at least once in that time as well.
For a chain driven bike you'll also need a Scottoiler fitted to make it last longer.

That's why suggesting something solid but not that exotic like the GT or CX may make more sense for a commute.

Just some thoughts Thumbs Up

What about Bandit 600's? Seem pretty decent bikes?
It's a FT job so this will be a mon-fri commute every week.

I was running a cb500, 50 miles per day. Mon, Fri.

Not a single problem with it. (Well untill I rode merrilly into the back of an Audi, my fault , not the bikes)

Can give you a bit of a grin too, if you keep the revs up.

Would heartily recommend.
58mpg (est) if you pootle along, 35ish if you thrash it.

Some info from Used Motorcycle Guide site (was once a magazine, replaced by UBG).

Quote:
XJ600S DIVERSION
1992 on, 599cc DOHC four,
60hp 125mph 55mpg 400lb
Neat attempt at a modern retro with well designed motor that finally moves on from the old XJ series. Lack of outright power’s the main complaint but reasonable purchase and running costs. Suspension a bit weak for two-up work, and goes off with age; plus usual caliper rot in winter. Also wheel bearings short-lived. Also Jap market 43hp, 385lb, 400cc version. Naked XJ600N discounted to £3200 in ’99

Quote:
KAWA GT550
1983 on, 553cc DOHC four,
56hp, 115mph, 50mpg, 450lb
Highly practical four that has run to as much as 250,000 miles in the hands of mad DR’s. Check for electronic ign burn-outs, ruined camchains (50k), worn bores and naff gearboxes (after 75k). Both high miler hacks and nice tourers available. Post ’93 bikes have more low end and midrange grunt from ZR mill. Loads of used spares, engines, etc.

Quote:
600 BANDIT
1995 on, 599cc DOHC four,
80hp, 135mph, 50mpg, 430lb
Naked sportster with interesting line in style, handling and performance but rather heavy for this genre. Engine’s tough and long lasting, chassis can go off after 20k, especially brakes and forks' seals. Some DR's have done 100k!

Quote:
HONDA NTV600/650
1987 on, 583/650cc OHC v-twin,
55hp 110mph 50mpg 400lb
A mixture of upgraded VT500 motor and high tech, single sided s/arm chassis that sold well when the price was discounted for the 650 version in ’93. Some DR bikes went around the clock, so motor tough and chassis competent. A lot of reasonable bikes on offer but avoid DR bikes, anything with oil leaks, slipping clutch or rattly top ends. Also 400/600 Bro’s
FYI the NTV650 is what the newer NT650V Deauville is based on.

A review of others from UBG
Arrow Honda CB500 click here.
Arrow Honda CX500 click here.

Looks to me like you've already decided on a 600 Bandit though.

HTH Thumbs Up
