Hi guys/gals
Im having problems with my L2 zxr400 sometimes it takes more than 5 goes to start it and also I can hear a ticking noise towards the top of the engine ive been told it could be the cam chain? anyone know how much this would cost me to sort out? and if its ok for me to ride the bike as it is at the moment as I have a trip to alton towers planned with some mates.
Also changing the Oil/Sparkplugs/Oil filter are these easy jobs? and would it be worth doing them myself or just getting the bike in for a service?
thanks ____________________ Hear Thy Call..............................

In regards to the starting problem, I don't know but I am sure someone else will.
In regards to the service question, they are easy jobs to do if you know what you are doing but it is always good to put your bike in for a service, always add to the service history which is good when you come to sell. But the odd time you have to do it, best to do it yourself I find.
Now please...someone who knows that they are talking about help this gentleman!

5 goes to start it? Sounds like a sparkplug prob to me. Pretty sure the plugs (you'll need four) are under the airbox, you'll need a ratchet extension thing to get the airbox off and a sparkplug guage thingymajig.
The oil drain plug is a bolt near the back of the under side of the fairing. The oil filter is near the front. You can see a black cone thing behind the radiator (ish).
Kickstart will prob post something far more useful. Explainations aren't my thing.
[EDIT] Try it yourself mate unless the bike needs a full service or you don't have all the tools.
Try sending Yams a PM. Maybe he'll do you a workshop CD. There not great but you can see where things live etc. |

Thanks for the replies lads
Well the mileage is 22357 and the last service was two or three weeks before I bought the bike last October.
The bike had been parked up in the living room for the past 5-6 months as I needed to get my test passed/insurance sorted.
I've been riding it for the last 3 days now and it seems once it is started and warmed up it will start up first or second try quite easily.
Saying that I had about 1/3 of a tank full of old petrol while it was stored away but I did fill up yesterday to a full tank with some fresh juice and its made little difference.
I must say however they are cracking bikes cant believe the grin factor once i start her up and give her a good thrashing:) ____________________ Hear Thy Call..............................

I'd give it a service as a matter of course as its been stood up for so long. Changing the plugs will help a little, also, I'd get the carbs off and clean out the float bowls, jets.. etc...
From memory (had my ZXR about 10 years ago!), its tank and air box off and then you have good access to the plugs, just make sure you have a long extension on your socket as they are deep in the head.
I actually managed to change my whole engine on my own too, with the bike on its side stand and a trolly jack!!!! What was I thinking!!! |
