I'm thinking of buying a K1/K2 GSXR600 but I think it's a grey import. Many of my bikes have been but they've been much older and all been 400cc or smaller so I'm just wondering what the deal is with a bigger bike from 2001 or so. Did they still do the 190km/h restriction thing by then and did that include 600cc+ bikes or was it just on 400s because of their learner laws? Will it be the same power as the official import model? I assume there's no other differences like spring rates for the average lighter japanese rider or anything?

It's not a "grey" those are bikes that weren't officially sold in the UK market.
The Japs did/do restrict their bigger bikes as well including the GSXRs,CBRs etc best way to tell is have a test ride and see if it goes over the limit 180kph/110mph ish.

Ah yes, of course, parallel import then. I'm not so worried about the speed restrictor as I imagine that would be easy to remove (if it hasn't already been). More worried about differences in power output that might be a bit more complicated to undo.

It could still be a grey import. AFAIK grey imports are just vehicles that are brought in through means other than the manufactures official import system.

Bezzer is right. Grey imports are motorcycles that were never officially sold in the UK, and are imported outside of the official importer. Typical examples include SV400, and GSXR400 1990-1994.

Parallel imports are bikes from other countries, but they are also official UK models.

In this instance what the OP is describing is a parallel import.

The restrictors you're looking for will depend on the country it's from. I guess you're talking about Japan though. Unsure if they still have the 112mph/180kph restrictor, they certainly used to. Would also fully expect it to have different suspension settings as standard, although it may be as simple as changing the weight of fork oil used.

I just bought a K2 GSXR600 too.

I don't really know why either. It's quite pretty, maybe that's why.

Stupid impulse fingers. Laughing

No offence but I think they're pretty ugly Laughing But then I think my ZX6R is too so it's not going to be an aesthetic downgrade.

And yes, it is from Japan, for some reason I thought I'd mentioned that Embarassed

Laughing

So kph clocks, probably restricted to 112 mph, in my experience of greys they come with Japanese friendly suspension, so they're set up too softly for our lager swelled bodies.

It's been here for a few years at least so I imagine the speed restriction will be long gone. Bloke selling it is American too so maybe the suspension has been stiffened and reinforced to cope with a 32 stone burger muncher Laughing I have emailed him these questions so just waiting on a reply.

Not fussed about the clocks either...at one point recently I had 2 bikes and 2 cars and all 4 of them were japanese imports with kph speedos Cool

EDIT: Wait...hang on you bastards...I did mention it was Japanese in the original post Dance! Well, in a round about way at least.
