Hello all,

I have been looking for a decent bike for some time now, I just came across a NS125F *1988*. Everything appears fine with the bike bar the dead rev counter (for lack of a better term Cool ).

I have talked with the seller regarding the problem and he has no idea of the extent of the problem, nor how much it would be to fix.

I would like to know, worst case scenario, how much would it be to replace the rev counter or indeed fix the problem?.

Cheers!

(Just to note, the bike kicks over and starts as normal. The only issue is the non-existant rev counter).

Hi it will either be the following;

CDI output to the Tacho
The tacho itself
The wiring to the tacho

In the first instance a new cdi will be a few quid but doubtless you will find one on ebay quite cheap. Ditto for the tacho.

As for the wiring, you could do with a wiring diagram to see where the wires go but it can be sussed otherwise as usually there are three wires for a tachometer circuit, one to earth, one to switched live and the other to the cdi.

ask him if the lights on the tacho work,

when my tacho went dead the backlight went, there was a loose plug

also if u touch the tacho wire on the battery to a 12v the needle will jump (aka tacho drive isnt dead)

I have e-mailed the seller and I am awaiting the reply Mr. Green, I'll post the reply in this thread if I need more information (which is a safe bet Very Happy).

Thanks again!

EDIT:

I have received an e-mail from the seller, it reads:

hi, you would probably be able to get rev counter from breakers for this bike, as it is 17years old!!!, its not a digital rev counter, its the old normal type, and it doesnt have a light on it.
the bike is 1988, not 1998 !!,

I am not really sure what to do at the moment. The bike is on auction at the moment. Does anyone think it's worth a go?.

If there was no output from the CDI then the coil would have no juice and the bike would not even run so it can't be that. I would check the wiring, bound to be a bit of corrosion there somewhere considering the age of the bike. However if it is screwed, then just replace the whole clock unit, they are on ebay all the time and go for about £20.

i'd go for it mate. I expect it something real simple to sort. The light is out on my rev counter, still works, just try not to redline it at night Laughing

Is he not implying it has a normal, cable operated rev counter?

This being the case, it needs a new cable as they break if you look at them sideways. Just like the one on my H100 did today.

That's what I am hoping is the case. I was hoping it would be an individual fault with a cable and not an extensive problem.

The reason I wanted to ask here is because I live quite a long way away from the bike and I wanted to know if the rev counter problem is a straight-forward (or cheap, I should say Very Happy) issue to resolve, before I go an see it.
