You know when you bike hits redline.

For example an rs250 do you just keep the throttle pulled back till you dont go any faster, or are you hurting the bike??

To be honest you will know when you need to change gear there is no right or wrong time to change depends on the situation.

Better changing before the redline, your max power will be made about 1-2k maybe before your into the red....

My rgv250 was well out of power before it got anywhere near the redline, the only use for it was flat out in 6th.

Are youre revs mechanicly or electronicly kept below the red line, or is the red line pushing your engine as fast as it will go?

i dont think either the RS125 or RS250 have rev limiters

so in theroy u can eat the engine with a minute or two in the red??

125s are pretty much designed to (cg was anyway)...

A mate has a zxr400 which was a race bike at some point in its life, the rev limiter was taken off, missing a gear ment certain doom for the engine one fine day.. just finished fiting a new engine, old one had cracked oil passageways and bent valves, not good..

I'm sure most if not all bikes with cdis have the rev limiter built into that? or seperately? mine never goes above 1000rpm to the redline... just never needs it

One thing to watch is, rev-limiters don't work when changing down.

Mine sits above the redline in 6th gear for at least 50% of it's useage time. I have to for it to move anywhere.

When accelerating i upshift as soon as i feel the power drop off, which is about 500rpm before the redline.

I don't have a tacho on my bike so I've just learnt to change gear when it sounds right, but it still depends on whether I'm thrashing it or just strolling into town.

Generally I believe a 2 stroke will run out of power before it starts to do it's self damage.

My slightly underpowered Aprilia RS250 starts to lose power as you get into the redline.
I believe this is why they often don't bother with rev limiters on 2 strokes.

I regularly hit the red line on the RS, it keeps pulling into it so why not.

I do cover the clutch though.

I used to hit the limiter on the blade all the time, usually when I was just having too much fun tis not advisible though, especially on your crappy lil 125's.
Don't think the GPZ has one, or ever gets there.

Newer bikes have limiters and survive high revs better.

Thrash older bikes and your asking for dropped valves etc Check out the Gpz305.......
