Hello
i sold a bike on ebay and the winning bidder said that he will get a friend in england to send the cheque and i can deduct the cost of the bike and send him the money back.

I knew this was a scam, but i played along waiting for the cheque to come to see if i could find out where he lives etc.

Today a bankers draft arrived from "National Irish Bank" what should i do now, do i go to the bank and tell them or the police station or do i do nothing.

It would be a case of popping in to your branch and drawing on the funds available. Happens all the time in the bank.

One flight to OZ later they will be none the wiser Thumbs Up

Or i could put it in that paying in box.

Well, now they've got your address, expect your bike to get nicked shortly.

You could try and get the police interested but as no crime has yet been committed, i.e. they don't have the bike, you haven't tried to cash the cheque, they will probably not be interested. On the other hand you have information the police might like, I suppose you have an address they want the money to be sent to.

Give your local station a call and see what they say, if everyone just ignores this sort of scam then it just goes on and on...

Someone on a messageboard had pictures of his bike plastered on ebay, we bid the bike up to £1,000,000 so hopefully the seller got the message.

Always thought those National Irish Banks were dodgy. Is it at all possible to go onto one and ask them to cash the cheque I wonder?

The National Irish Bank is a genuine bank. They have no branches in the UK, as far as I know.

The fact that the bank is genuine does not mean that the banker's draft is, however.

Personally, I would e-mail the NIB and ask them.

Thumbs Up

Tell him the bike is ready for collection, and when someone comes round to collect it (this person will also be in on the scam) have the police waiting to arrest him. Very Happy

It doesn't work that way, they don't want the bike. It's the 'balance' of the money they want. The draft takes 3-7 days to clear, after about 2-3 days it will appear as a credit on your account, 'Great' you think, 'I'll send the balance of the money', then about 2-3 days later you get tolde it's fake and the take ALL the money away from you.

I did the same thing as you, just went through with it to see what the cheque looked like knowing it would be fake.
it now sits in a draw somewhere, it was for 4800 quid and looked very convincing.

to those who dont know, no one will ever come to collest the bike.

If you are selling the bike for say 2000 they ask you to take a cheque for 4000, cash it, take your 2000 then forwrd the rest via a cheque or bankers draft to another address.(usually overseas)
After a few weeks when you bank finally says the original cheque was a fake (it takes them that long to fully process it) they demand ALL the money back from YOU and they will make you pay it.
BE WARNED.

just tell the guy who sent it to fuck off and ignore all his future emails.
Its an old scam and i find it hard to believe that there are some people out there who do not know about it still.

I agree! DO NOT CASH THE CHEQUE!!! you will end up with the bill eventually

Hi,

I would contact the bank and/or the police. A crime has been committed in that they forged or stolen a bank draft.

If its possible to get someone done for this it might help.

Regards

C
ps It can takes months for a foreign bankers draft to clear.

Is it a cheque or is it a banker draft? There is a big diference, cheques have to clear bankers drafts don't as they are the equivilent to cash. Bankers drafts are used to move money when you sell your house etc.

Seek a banks advice, any of them will be able to help you especially if you think its a stolen draft/cheque.

Do not, under any circumstances, try to get cash from this.

You know it is fake. Trying to cash it would make you guilty of fraud.

The bank will tell you a bank draft doesn't bounce. What they won't tell you is what you have in your hand is probably a forgery.

Just so you know that I know what I'm talking about, the sort code is 95-00-03 and the account number is 01001000.

Check out Back Street Heroes, January 2005 page 14.

Cheers,

Byrnie.

Inform ebay of the scam, they can probably trace the "buyer".

Yeah this was offered to me for my car although the way they put it was that they had a builder in England that was going to pcik the car up and ship but they would pay me the money for the car and extra for me to give to the builder on their behalf and the builder would ship the car on their behalf!

Ok if that does'nt ring any alarm bells then don't know what will!
