What is the best way to secure a bike using a chain & padlock?
I dont have a ground anchor, so should I feed it through the wheel and around the frame somehow?
How do you lot do it?

Best way I think is to go through the wheel and wrap round the swinging arm!!!! To be afir if they want you bike all you can do is try and deter them as they will get it if they really want it. So make the bike imobile as possible

I usually pass the chain through the rear wheel, through the subframe and lock it over the seat. That way there is no slack.

It'll only put someone off, I would never put any confidence in any security device sadly.

i'm thinking about welding two chains together and using 2 locks on them, i've got a big chain from an old block and tackle (engine hoist) I was gonna do it with. If I make sure the chain isn't loose when locking it up in theory their gonna hve to cut through 4 bars of the chain to get it off.

theirs nothing you can do to make it 100% theft proof, nothing out their you can buy big bolt cutters and the stuff they use to freeze the metal will get through any thickness chain or security device.

personally I think the best deterent is parking it or locking it up in the right place. Parking it somewhere out of site can be a bad thing as theirs no-one around to hear of see them steal it but parking it in full view can also be a bad thing as your advertising it to them.

Cross your fingers?
Nah you could use more than one chain, disc locks, alarms, imobilisors, etc...
Someone at college has an alarm that beeps realy loudly and strangely when you get too close to it... as i found out yesterday when i went to lock my bike up next to it Razz

See because I got a quote of £750 for fully comp on my NC24, £550 tpft, £320 TP.
Im gonna go TP coz the bike is only worth like £900 anyway. So I was gonna get like an Oxford Monster chain & disk lock to keep me baby safe when its not at home.

Not a lot to be honest. Just don't ever rely on anything to keep your bike theft proof. The best thing to do is make sure the bike is as immobile as possible. Don't bother with the steering lock, they actually help theives - when they break the steering lock it also smashes the ignition barrel, making it easier to hotwire the bike.

Try to chain the bike to something and at home don't leave it on display. Sleep with one eye open, and a large object under your pillow Wink

I lock mine up with a yale padlock & reinforced steel insulated cable through the rear wheel and rear subframe (through pillion pegs) and attached to the house with several large bolts. and a nice alarm. I'm gonna get a good disc lock for it though.

Incidentally, when applying for an insurance quote, is it uncommon for one to 'embellish' the security measures on one's bike, like saying my alarm is thatchem approved when it isn't? Does this affect the insurance quote alot?

It's not that common simply because it's so unwise.
If your bike is stolen and you are found not to have those security measures in place, your insurance company will not pay up.
Or as they say, "you're only cheating yourself".

I park the bike on the drive under cover, with a chain around a big brick post and through the front whiil in and out of the spokes with the lock locked around one of the spokes, so there's no slack.
The disc lock goes on the back.
When I get the new bike i'm getting another chain and disc lock.

Yeah, I thought so. Mine is kept in the garage around the back of the house.
