Lucky police escape?

Was riding home yesterday evening and filtered up to the front of a set of traffic lights.
The road is a section of dual carriageway (no barriers) and is a 40mph limit.

Well, I was between the two lanes of traffic and, as I do sometimes, I ragged the bike off the lights. I just love the acceleration buzz & leaving the cars behind. I only ride 'briskly' up to the 40 limit and then cruise along at 40.

I looked in my mirrors to get the satisfaction of seeing the cars get small, when I saw the flashing blue lights of a traffic police Volvo...


Arse, I thought.

I slowed down and went through the gears as I approached the next set of traffic lights. There was a red car behind me that pulled over and the police car sat directly behind me as I slowed. He made no effort to overtake in the right hand lane until I was practically at a standstill. He then went past me and slowed in front of me. I was just about to come completely to a stop & prepare to put the stand down, when he suddenly speeded up and went through the lights up towards Portsdown Hill.

I can only imagine that he had something more pressing to attend to.

I was just getting the adrenaline flowing as well, in anticipation of some sort of confrontation......
I wasn't speeding, wheeling (as if!) or doing anything naughty. Although, I was wearing my black visor, but was carrying my legal one in case of being stopped/poor visiblity etc.
I almost wanted him to stop me in order to question why.

Another thing is that I didn't even see him until he was behind me, I cannot, for the life of me, recall if he was in the queue of cars at the lights that I filtered through! Autopilot strikes again!

Coming back from uni in the dark, I had a police car come flying up behind me with its lights on. As soon as it had got behind me, it turned its lights off, and stayed there for about the next 5 miles until the next roundabout, whereupon it buggered off.

Weird. Mind you, as it was dark I've no idea how much traffic I was holding up, but I wasn't losing too much to the guy in front really.

They tend to do that i have been followed home by the police a couple of times. I think they are just waiting for you to slip up. Something against bikers i think expecting us to tear ass around all the time!

I've had similar in the past from just riding down the road. Volvo pulled right up behind me, then along side and finally pulled in front, where the driver and passenger both turned around in their seats to stare. I got to the point where I was just going to pull over and ask them what the f*ck they wanted, then they buggered off. Nothing better to do.

You can never cross a solid white line. if you can overtake on the inside of it without going over then you have done nothing wrong.

Technically it's illegal isn't it, but I'd imagine most coppers would see it as a matter of common sense. If it's a nice straight road which is clogged up with traffic, no-one coming the other way, I think it would have to be a really pissed off copper to ticket you. 'Course, they exist...

Usually you will get done if they see you do it on the open road. I have always interpreted it the same way as zephyrgirl.

They could try to pull you over for undue care though, it can have a bit of a loose interpretation depending on the copper. Probably more likely to try and "educate" you. Think, if I remember correctly, that you aren't supposed to pass the lead vehicle at a junction.

TBH Rookie biker, after my pseudo scare last night I was extra wary this morning when I considered overtaking the queue.

A traffic cop actually went past in the opposite direction a minute before I decided to just go for it and get past them all.

I thought to myself, 'Well, hopefully there won't be one along for a little bit now.'
