Bought an Oxford Monster disc lock today (£40) which is money I don't really have at the moment and it wouldn't fit under the seat (ZXR4 has no underseat storage). I didn't want to spend more cash on tank bag etc and I remembered this awia personal stereo bag knocking around the house. Trying to figure out different ways to attach it to the pillion seat, I used the bags belt around the seat but the bag slips to the side and is a pain in the arse. Thinking

So I took the stap off the pillion seat and put it through the belt loops and then reattached it. Sucess. It's a tight fight and shouldn't go anywhere. The lock fits in the bottom pocket of the bag with the reminder cord and ciggarettes, mobile etc fits in the top pocket. As it's not water proof I've put a carrier bag in there so wrap up my mobile etc. Laughing

Anyway it doesn't look great but it means my pockets won't be busting at the seams and disc locks in pockets can be heavy.

Just thought I'd share that with you. Laughing Laughing Laughing (Look at the rust on that fairing bolt Surprised )

Its scarey when you see how much companys charge for these sort of things when you can do the same for cheap... (i mean does your lock bag really need to be water proof???)

Got myself a pair of gasmask bags to go on my bike as pank paniers, £15 for the pair... cheapest ive seen elsewhere is £80 Confused need to work out how to attach them first but shouldn't be too tricky...

Allways on the lookout for things that "do the job"

Should've gone to Lidl the other week Wink

£3 for a disclock, £6 for a tankpack - both of reasonable quality!

Just what I was thinking, £40 on a disc lock hardly seems to be 'budget' biking.

I reckon two of the Lidl ones would be as good protection as any disc lock; if they are going to the effort to try and get even a cheap one off, they can probably get the expensive one off as well.

Problem with tank bags (magnetic anyway) is you have to take them off when you leave the bke etc. Something else to carry. Also I have more faith in a thatcham approved disclock that a £3 job.

Well I've just taken the pillion pegs and handles off so I can wire brush 'em and spray 'em with Hammerite. The things you do to please BCFers. Wink Bike looks loads better without them though, much sleeker. Might brush 'em, spray 'em but only put them back on at MOT time.

The things you have to do 'cause a photo shows you up.. Very Happy

Yeah after the rent, CSA payments, loan repayments, shopping and all other costs, ill just go and spend ten squillion quid on bike accessories.....

This is about budget biking after all, biking isnt a luxury for all of us. I have to keep my machine and gear running on a shoestring!

I bought a cheap disc lock for a tenner because you shouldnt leave the bike unattended for long with just a disc lock anyways, and as long as it deters the casual thief from having ago its done its job.

I also economised on chain. I bought security chain and padlock from a security catalogue, which is identical to the oxford item, just says security on the packet and costs one third the price due to it not having motorcycle anywhere on the labelling lol

Either way, they get the disc off and it doesn't matter how much you pay.

I haven't really heard off disc locks being broken to get at a bike; if they have the kit to get even a £3 one off, they've probably also got a van.

Might be more of a deterent to a local scallie though.

G,

TBH mate I'd rather pay the extra for piece of mind. A £3 lock would worry me. I'll sleep better knowing that mines attack tested and thatcham approved, it'll put the chavs off at least. If a pro wants it he'll take it no matter what security you have. Just wish I could afford a decent alarm. Confused

I just don't think security is the right place to be tight that's all. Like I say, piece of mind. My other lock is an Oxford Titan... Confused

Is a chav actually going to know the difference between a cheapish lock and an expensive one? They'll see its locked up and they'll go and nick a bike without locks I'd expect.

Wow. I bought the best lock I could afford at the moment and people have a problem with it?? Jesus.

Even the average chav has access to the internet and it was everywhere that the Oxford Titan could be opened with a pen. You could even download videos of it being done. Might of well been an official tutorial!

You could staple your bike with all the best security in the world to you scrotom and some c*nt would have it. Just doing my best to keep it mine that's all. Rolling Eyes

No problems here Flip, buying the best you can afford seems like a good idea to me! Thumbs Up

However, it doesn't necessarily fit with your thread title of Biking on a Budget. Wink

That surely means you pop along to your local pound shop and buy one of their big brass ones, which is a great visible deterrent but will probably break open if you even look at it funny. Laughing

I'm not sure you can bike on a budget in my experiance. Very Happy Bikes = money.

The point was after buying the lock I couldn't afford to get a proper bike bag so I used something I had lying around the house.

As Babyyam said, I only mentioned it because of the title of the thread.

I think a lot of people mis-spend their money for 'peace of mind', apologies if you're offened, but still something to consider for the future in my opinion.

May I just say two things, which you probably won't like.

Honda 400s have crap loads of under pillion seat storage (lockable as well) , and they don't rust! Mr. Green

I can fit all my tools, phone, wallet, ear plugs, pencils, cloth roll tape and on top there's even space for a chain wax can / bit of shopping or a take away. Mr. Green

Goodbye Laughing

ive managed to get a GSXR1100 from a dead non runner to a scream machine with a budget of 300 quid, including the MOT, tax and a set of tyres!

Good tricks to save dosh are finding screws nuts n bolts that fit, bearings that fit and avoiding OEM at all costs! Bodging is cool, my 1100 sported bandit 400 coils for quite a while lol, and most of the loom is now my home brew made largely from mains cabling (coated in ignition sealer to keep out the damp)

Remember that the manufacturers artificially inflate the price of OEM spares and your a mug to pay their prices. There are good aftermarket parts that are often of better quality than oem if you dont mind a little work.
